Hour.
There are 24 hours in a day. A day is as a thousand years.
So I took 1000 and divided it by 24 and came up with:
1000 / 24
41.666...

So I thought, what if an hour is equal to a year?
Well, that would bring us to just a little over 40 years.

The first time I find the word temptation in the Bible is Psalms 95:8
Psa 95:8 Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness:
it continues:
Psa 95:9 When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work.
Psa 95:10 Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways:
Psa 95:11 Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest.

This thread can go down two paths. That of the hour or that of temptation.

I'm going to share verses, or do a "find a word" word study, and I'm going to begin with the last first, temptation.

The word temptation is found 16 times in 15 verses. I have already shared the first verse.
This is the only verse containing the singular word "temptation" found in the Old Testament.

The next 8 verses are found in the gospels.
Mat 6:13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Mat 26:41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Mar 14:38 Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.

Luk 4:13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.

Luk 8:13 They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.

Luk 11:4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

Luk 22:40 And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.

Luk 22:46 And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.

The remaining 6 verses, 5 in Paul's letters and 1 in Revelation, I will post in the next post.

continued:
5 times the word temptation is found in Paul's letters:

1Co 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Gal 4:14 And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.

1Ti 6:9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare,
and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

Heb 3:8 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:

Jas 1:12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

And the final time in Revelation:

Rev 3:10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

The day of temptation. a day is as a 1000 years. 24 hours in a day. 1000/24= a little longer than 40 years, or 40 years (long)

This day of temptation is repeated in Hebrews chapter 3.
Hebrews in the wilderness, Hebrews in the NT.
Maybe a connection?

Heb 3:7 Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,
Heb 3:8 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:
Heb 3:9 When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.
Heb 3:10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.
Heb 3:11 So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.

Man tempted God in the wilderness led by Moses.
David in his Psalm then reminds us that man tempted God in the wilderness.
Paul then, again reminds us that man tempted God in the wilderness.

Man was not tempted, but rather man tempted God.

In this 3rd chapter of Hebrews, Paul is explaining the change in the authority or Priesthood over God's house.

Jesus Our High Priest
Heb 3:1 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;
Heb 3:2 Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.
Heb 3:3 For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.
Heb 3:4 For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.
Heb 3:5 And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;
Heb 3:6 But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.

Moses is as a "shadow" of things to come. He is a "type" of Jesus. He was placed in authority and the priesthood over God's house until Christ came.
And now Paul gives us a "warning" as it were, not to tempt the Lord as our fathers did in the wilderness.
We are the next generation.
Again, it is man tempting God, not God tempting man.

Paul goes on to explain how it was that man did tempt God in the wilderness. And not only how, but also who.

Heb 3:12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
Heb 3:13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
Heb 3:14 For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;
Heb 3:15 While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.
Heb 3:16 For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.
Heb 3:17 But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness?
Heb 3:18 And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?
Heb 3:19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.

The next 2 verses we find the word temptation are similar.

Mat 26:41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Mar 14:38 Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.

This entering into... temptation.
Into.. unbelief. A need for God to prove himself to us. To provoke God.

Here again we find the hour..., the hour of temptation. This is the evening that Jesus will be taken from them and sent to face his own trial.

Mat 26:40 And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?
Mat 26:41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

More than turning water into wine, more than feeding 5000 or 7000, more than walking on water, More than signs,
This was to be the most critical time their faith would need to be activated.
And they were sleeping at the wheel. This would be the hour of temptation that their faith would have to overcome unbelief.
They had a little faith, (oh ye of little faith) but the doubt was still there. And it would reveal itself through denial.
Jesus asked Peter to stay awake 3 times, and 3 times Peter denied him.

How often do we tempt God? How often do we fall into doubt or a need for some sign of proof?
Peter never left Jesus though. Even though he followed from a distance.. the spirit in him moved him to stay the course.
This is spiritual warfare in the flesh. And Peter had to overcome this battle.

Mat 26:45 Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
Mat 26:46 Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me.

Question:
If God knew that the children in the wilderness would tempt him, provoke him, and have no faith in him,
Why did he free them from Egypt to begin with?

The only answer I can find is:

Jhn 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Who really betrayed God? Was it just Judas? Or was it the world that God loved?

The hour of temptation:

Luk 22:52 Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves?
Luk 22:53 When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.

Remember in the last post how Paul had told us:
Heb 3:16 For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.

This then was their hour, and the complete evil heart of unbelief. The power of darkness.
Heb 3:12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.

Jesus had been with the chief priests and captains and the elders for 33 years. He was with them when he was a child.
Know ye not that I must be about my father's business?
He was with them teaching in the temple throughout his whole ministry.
They knew who he was. They even knew him as the carpenter's son.
Jesus was no stranger to them.
Just as those who came out of Egypt were no stranger to God and the signs he showed them.
Yet they could not, would not, shake off their unbelief.
This is the power of darkness.
This is the temptation that is over all the world.

Peter and the disciples were only sleeping. But these that took him, were dead.
Heb 3:17 But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness?

The hour of temptation.

The next time we find the word temptation is again in the wilderness. Jesus himself will be tempted by the devil himself.
And again we find an "hour" or some form of an hour being 40 days instead of 40 years.
I'm wondering if the duration of that time, if it is shorter it is more intense, than spread out over a longer period of time?
It is a time of temptation, but the intensity of that temptation seems stronger if it's confined into a shorter period.
Just an abservation.

Luk 4:13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.

Let's look at these temptations. Maybe we can find a correlation between Jesus' being provoked as God was provoked in the wilderness also.

Luk 4:1 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
Luk 4:2 Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.

And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost..
Fully armoured, fully prepared, ready for battle.

returned from Jordan.
I want to take a minute here because I feel this is important.
Jesus had gone to the Jordan to be baptised by John the Baptist. John is about to put Jesus under the water, this representing his death,
and rising up from the water, this representing a rebirth, a new life.
Baptism thus signifying the washing away of all sins.
Heb 10:22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
It is at this point, when everything is made new, fully armoured, fully prepared,
when the devil makes his first and persistant attack on newborn christians.
Jesus showed us this so we ourselves would know what to expect and to be prepared for battle.

Mat 13:18 Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.
Mat 13:19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.

Luk 4:2 Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.
Luk 4:3 And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.

Exo 16:1 And they took their journey from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came unto the wilderness of Sin, (coincidence?) which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departing out of the land of Egypt.
Exo 16:2 And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness:
Exo 16:3 And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.

Carnal food vs Spiritual food

When we first hear the word of God as newborn babes, we may not understand the meaning of certain words or applications.
It took me many years to understand fully that bread in the bible spiritually meant the word of God.
It took me awhile to make that first connection between carnal knowledge and spiritual understanding.

Here the devil is testing Jesus' hearing, his understanding, the difference between carnal and spiritual things.
This is the beginning of discernment.
No one is born again with full spiritual understanding. It takes some more or less time to be able to grasp spiritual insight.
The devil saw Jesus just be "born again" thinking that he was just any ordinary person.
And so he said, If ... If thou be the son of God... then you should know this riddle. I'm going to prove you to see if you know what you say you know. Or are you bluffing.

Luk 4:4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

Jesus was not a seed by the way side:
Mat 13:19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.

The children in the wilderness chose the carnal bread instead of the spiritual bread that God gave to them for 40 years.
The manna that Moses fed the children with is not the same manna that comes from God.
Moses fed them carnal knowledge. God feeds us spiritual knowledge.

At this point the devil moves on to the next temptation.

I'll take any advice and help with this study.
It's hard to cover every verse.

@Ziggy

I love the hymn:

'Oh Saviour Christ, Thou too art man,
Thou hast been tempted, tested, tried,
Thy kind but searching gaze would scan
The very wounds that shame would hide.'

He was indeed 'in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin' (Hebrews 4.15) and so we can come boldly to the Throne of Grace!

The "hour of temptation" Jesus referred to in Revelation 3 was given specifically to the Church of Philadelphia, which represents one of the two Churches of His very elect who will not be deceived by Antichrist.

Rev 3:10
10 Because thou hast kept the word of My patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

KJV

That last phrase, "which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth", applies to what that "hour of temptation" is about. It is about the "great tribulation" event Jesus warned of while upon the Mount of Olives with His disciples.

This is WHY we are to pay particular attention to ALL parameters given in a Bible verse, because that is how certain terms, like "hour of temptation", are Biblically defined.

Having studied Christ's warnings of what we are to be watching for the last days of this world, just what did He forewarn us about?...

In Matthew 24 and Mark 13 by Lord Jesus, and by Apostle Paul in 2 Thessalonians 2, and by Apostle John in Revelation 13, we are warned about a false one coming prior to Jesus' coming, who will mimic our Lord Jesus Christ, and work great signs and wonders to deceive the whole... world, excepting Christ's elect. THAT... is what the "hour of temptation" will be about.

And because... those of the Church of Philadelphia KEPT His Word, like Jesus said there, that is WHY they will not be deceived by that coming false-Messiah, and thus not subject to that "hour of temptation" that is to come upon the WHOLE WORLD.

The hour of temptation.
This phrase is found in Revelation 3:10. It means "the time of testing" and applies to the Tribulation (which is not for the saints). While it is addressed to church at Philadelphia, it could have general application to the Church of God: Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

Beware brethren:

The Pre-trib Rapture theory specifically tries to teach that the "hour of temptation" is not meant for Christ's Church simply because the Church is raptured to Heaven PRIOR to the "great tribulation", but that idea is NOT written anywhere in God's Word. It instead is a doctrine from men, and was first preached in the Christian Church in 1830's Great Britain by the Edward Irving church and John Nelson Darby.

The "hour of temptation" Jesus defined right there in the same verse He mentioned it, pointing to the event of the "great tribulation". And the main event of the "great tribulation" God's Word shows is a temptation to worship the coming Antichrist in place of Jesus. And Jesus showed the Church is definitely... subject to that testing during the great tribulation, because He showed His coming to gather His saints is AFTER that tribulation (Matthew 24:29-31; Mark 13:24-27). Thusly, I CHALLENGE anyone to prove that timing of His coming Jesus gave there to be prior... to that tribulation He taught.

How is it possible for the anti-christ to mimic Christ?

For every good thing Chist does, there should be an equal evil thing the anti-christ does.
For instance:
Christ brings peace, antichrist brings war.
Christ is love, anti-christ is hate.

We know what we have is not what the world is chasing after.
There is a complete difference between night and day.

Wouldn't the antichrist then be that which is in complete opposition to Christ?
And the people that are inclined to be that way, will indeed see him as their messiah?

I still can't find the rapture in the bible, maybe someone can show me?
Thank You

If the hour of temptation is in the NT, then it's in the OT.
And I believe it has to do with falling away to other gods in the countries around where Moses was leading Israel to the promised land.
You can read it and see it all throughout Deuteronomy.

After being freed from Egypt, after traveling 40 years through the wilderness, right before crossing the Jordan,
God gave the Israelites a warning.

Deu 6:10 And it shall be, when the LORD thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not,

(Jhn 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also)

Deu 6:11 And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full;

(I am the bread, I am the living water, I am the vine)

Deu 6:12 Then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.

(If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed)

Deu 6:13 Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name.

(Jhn 14:14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it)

Deu 6:14 Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you;
Deu 6:15 (For the LORD thy God is a jealous God among you) lest the anger of the LORD thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth.

Rev 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

This was their hour of temptaion. And it's ours as well.

2Ki 17:7 For so it was, that the children of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God, which had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods,
2Ki 17:8 And walked in the statutes of the heathen, whom the LORD cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they had made.
2Ki 17:29 Howbeit every nation made gods of their own, and put them in the houses of the high places which the Samaritans had made, every nation in their cities wherein they dwelt.

Rev 3:10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.
