I don't think any of us humans are abandoned projects. God says He causes the rain to fall on the wicked and the righteous. He also said, He will have mercy on whom He has mercy.
If I build a house and it burns down, I will try to save it. My house has no voice of it's own, and it's only my will that dictates whether or not the fire get's put out.
If I breed a horse for a specific purpose, and it becomes what I deem unfit for service, I'll sell the horse, or put it to pasture. But, I'll still feed it, and water it, and give it shelter. Other than that I'll have nothing to do with it.
Now, Humans were created for a purpose. Some of us God has deemed unfit for service. Those who have chosen not to follow Jesus, are put to pasture. But, God still feeds them and shelters them.
Those of us who are deemed fit for service, (for what ever reason God has decided), are cared for, and given shelters. We're also required to fullfill some task that God has in mind, either small or great.
At the same time, Missery is created by man due to our sinful nature. Some things are created by God as punishment, or for strengthening those who are in training for service. Sometimes, bad things just happen for no reason other than laws of "nature" or laws of physics.
You can't go dancing around expecting nothing to happen, you'll be sorely disapointed, and then wonder why it happened.
The fact of the matter is, God can step in and stop all disasters and suffering at anytime. But, that wouldn't give very many opportunities for anyone to do good, or to grow.
There will be a time for the end of suffering on earth, and that's after the judgment.
