Simon,
Simon,
Behold,
satan has demanded [permission] to sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you,
that your faith may not fail; when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.

do you ever have those passages that seem to change on you, where once what was the focus when you have read it more than dozens of times; the focus shifts and it is like reading it anew, for the first time?

for me, it was always Peter who was in focus, like when Peter walked on water and begin to sink. Out of this is born something that has always taken my focus and that is a testing of “our” faith, a testing of Peters faith. As if we can clench our fist real tight and squeeze, and some amount of our faith will bleed out to keep us from sinking and going under. Like, the saying you can’t get blood out of a turnip. I’ve always looked at Jesus Christ telling Peter that He prayed for him hoping that Peters faith would fail not, as Christ putting his Hope in Peter. But, for me, when the focus becomes Christ instead of Peter…is it possible Christ already knew Peter’s faith would fail? As in….without Me you can do nothing. As in, a change is coming. When Christ comforted Peter with telling him that He had prayed that His fail would not fail…Christ was going to the crucifixion, even while Peter zealously proclaimed “I will go to the death for You! I will go to Prison for You, Lord!”

Yet, “Peter, I have prayed for you that your faith fails not.” For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. [7] For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. [8] But God commends his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:6-8

Peter…satan has demanded [permission] to sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail;
John 17:9-26 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which You have given me; for they are Yours. [10] And all mine are Yours, and Yours are mine; and I am glorified in them. [11] And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your own name those whom You have given me, that they may be one, as we are. [12] While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name: those that You gave me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. [13] And now come I to You; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. [14] I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. [15] I pray not that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil. [16] They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. [17] Sanctify them through Your truth: Your word is truth. [18] As You have sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. [19] And for their sakes (Peter, I have prayed for you that your faith fails not) for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. [20] Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; [21] That they all may be one; as You, Father, are in me, and I in You, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that You have sent me. [22] And the glory which You gave me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: [23] I in them, and You in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that You have sent me, and has loved them, as You have loved me. [24] Father, I will that they also, whom You have given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which You have given me: for You loved me before the foundation of the world. [25] O righteous Father, the world has not known You: but I have known You, and these have known that You have sent me. [26] And I have declared unto them Your name, and will declare it : that the love wherewith You have loved me may be in them, and I in them.

Peter…when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.
