Idaho Legislature Passes Bill Allowing Bible in Public Schools

Public schools are already allowed to reference the Bible as well as other religious texts in the classroom, but this piece of legislation specifically focuses on the Bible and makes it clear that it can be used in public school instruction.

Again this will be a two-edged sword when it comes to other books that other religions want to bring in. It is my personal opinion that the school system should just teach academics and that nothing to do with religion. That is the responsibility of the parents, not the school system.

Actually the law is unneeded. It's already legal to use the Bible as a reference book in literature and world history classes. My kids started going to school as early as 1986 and the last one finished in 2006 so yes I am pretty sure given my experience of those 20 years that the best thing for Christian parents to do is to teach their children in the home as the Bible tells us to, and not leave it up to the public school system to instruct our children about Christianity. I'm also not a big believer in homeschooling because it shields our kids from their own responsibilities of being a light to the world. I'm not necessarily talking about evangelizing but I am talking about being an example of Christian love in a place where it probably is severely lacking.

Idaho Governor Vetoes Bible-Related Public School Bill

Idaho Gov. C. L. "Butch" Otter vetoed legislation Tuesday that would have expressly permitted the use of the Bible in public school instruction, calling the measure unconstitutional.

"I have deep respect and appreciation for the Bible as religious doctrine as well as a piece of historic literature," Otter wrote in a letter accompanying the veto. "However, allowing S1342 to become law is a direct contravention to the Idaho Constitution and it could result for the loss of funding and costly litigation for Idaho public schools."

I was listening to the muscle head revolution on The Mission radio (Kevin McCullough live) on the drive home today and McCullough said that the board of Ed. was ordering schools (or suggesting maybe) to include Islam in their curriculum because of higher incidences of bullying directed against Muslim students, however they cited no statistics to support their assertion with the exception of a poll based upon 87 Muslim students done back in 2008.
Actually I'm all for the schools teaching comparative religion and being all inclusive because the truth is able to stand on its own, and lessons concerning the source of civil and moral codes couldn't do anything but improve the chaotic conditions in schools in our time.
