Is 'Hate the Sin, Love The Sinner' Scriptural?

This is probably the most common expression by Christians that is not in the Bible but is it Scriptural? I've heard strong arguments for and against this and wonder what those in our community think?

Not the things God hates is a person and their body parts used to commit sin.


16 There are six things the Lord hates,
seven that are detestable to him:
17 haughty eyes,
a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood,
18 a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,
19 a false witness who pours out lies
and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.

Well, you post only addresses the love part, not the hate part of the question.

Jesus did talk about lopping off body parts if they cause you to sin. But I don't think those words were meant literally.

Correct . now let us examine what it means to love thy neighbor .
If we see a brother or sister in sin and we keep our eyes closed and say nothing to warn them , do we love them
or is this hate .
Remember love fullfills the law .
And now a word .
YE shall not hate your neighbor in your heart , you shall in any way rebuke , correct him and not allow sin upon Him .
We are not loving our neighbor if we allow them to remain in sin . For the end of sin is death .
Love would warn , it would correct .
Let us look and see what charity does , it covers a multitude of sins . Yes indeed .
Now lets look at what james said , If you convert the sinner from the error of his ways ye have saved a soul from death
and covered a multitude of sins . ITS LOVE to correct . Just as proverbs makes clear .
He who loves His own son chastises him , he who hates the child spares the rod , does not correct .
Yes my dear and loved sister , we have been lied too by many men today . Who tell us to not bother correcting our brethren .
But just get along for sake of unity . YET , what did paul warn the church at corinth .
HE said a little leaven will indeed leaven the whole lump . CORRECT THIS .

Let us be here for one another . Building one another up with pure holy sound doctrine .
Let us pray for one another . Always correcting error and speaking sound doctrine .
And in all things let us honor the glorious Lord who has saved us and is able to keep us from falling .
Let all that name the glorious name of Christ depart from inquity and always be praising and thanking the LORD .

Once i perceive they dont want to hear it , I move on . All we can do is speak the truth . And if they dont want it
That is on them .

Hello @April_Rose ... I'd agree with you. And yet, we should be listening to Holy Spirit to show us when and what to speak ... "a word in due season."

When my dad was dying of cancer and recontacted me after no contact for about 6 yrs, I knew it was the Lord's timing. I gently and consistently shared Jesus with him ... not pushing, but consistently... because he desperately needed to know Jesus loved him and to know forgiveness was his (from me) and also available from God if he received it.

My stepmother and especially my sister came down on me for sharing Jesus with him. But my dad received it. He gave his heart to the Lord a few months before he passed away on Thanksgiving Day in 2005. A few hours before he passed, I was able to pray with him and share some amazing time together and I witnessed the change in his countenance... peace and love like I'd never seen in his eyes before.
His last words to me were, "I'll be seein' ya." And I believe I will see him again ... and my son, and other children (babies) who are with the Lord.

All that to say ... be listening to the Lord because He will prompt you and give you words. Meanwhile, be praying that God will prepare their hearts to receive the message of Christ ... plant seeds (kindness and love, a word here and there) ...and trust God will water the seeds.
