Chapter 1
It took a couple hours for Nina to get to where she was going. The forest stretched for miles in Turkey Run State Park, and she ventured off the trail to find her secret place. She breathed out in relief. Alone at last. She reached in a hollow log and pulled out her Bible from her bag. She felt its soft leather back. She knew if found, it could mean trouble for her family and jail time for herself. At 16, she wasn't exactly sure when to share Jesus in a time Bibles were outlawed everywhere. Of course pastors would still preach God's Word from memory. It was how she herself found Christ. But after mass trials and disappearances...Christians grew more and more silent. And pastors became less heard of.
Nina read quietly from Proverbs. "Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised." Proverbs 31:30
"Sort of hard to see that." She thought. "Seems like fearing the Lord leads to people hating you."
A bit later, she careful wrapped her Bible back up in her bag, and placed it back in the hollow tree. "Thank you for this time with you, Lord." She prayed quietly.
