John MacArthur, pastor of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, died Monday at the age of 86 after a battle with pneumonia.

“Our hearts are heavy, yet rejoicing, as we share the news that our beloved pastor and teacher John MacArthur has entered into the presence of the Savior,” read a Monday-night post on the X account of “Grace to You” which is MacArthur’s media ministry. “This evening, his faith became sight. He faithfully endured until his race was run.”

The announcement comes after associate pastor Tom Patton told congregants at a July 13 Sunday service that MacArthur had been hospitalized with the illness, according to The Roys Report.

“This week, Pastor John contracted pneumonia,” Patton previously said during the service. “He was admitted into the hospital and may be in the presence of the Lord soon.”

Thanks for the info Scott, to be absent from the body and present with the Lord

2 Corinthians 5:8KJV
8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

I just bought the 2nd edition of his study bible. I had one for years and his complete commentary set. He was book knowledgeable for sure. I did learn from him. I know these are the last days, when so many great pastors and teachers have gone on to their reward.

I kinda have mixed feelings about John MacArthur. I used to listen to his Grace to You radio broadcast during morning drive time. I still have a CD with the MacArthur Study Bible on it, which I recently dug up to migrate the software to my new laptop. He knew his Bible.

And yet, over the years, as he grew deeper into Calvinism, it seemed to me that he lost his heart for the lost, and his presentation of the Gospel became loveless. It didn't have to be that way. It doesn't have to be that way.

Then you won't like Charles Spurgeon or Billy Graham. When you receive the gift of knowledge that many haven't received, you'll see clearly that God chooses the elect and gives them to Jesus to keep, and no one can snatch them out of God's hand. John 10:29

Your personal bias is showing, of course we all have that.

Then you won't like Charles Spurgeon or Billy Graham.
Billy Graham definitely had a heart for the lost. And as for Spurgeon, I love this quote:

Yeah, that man had a heart for the lost.

I saw that same heart in John MacArthur when I started listening to him in the '90s. I don't know if it was something that happened, or just weariness and years, but the love was lost. The lost are lost because God ordained they'd be lost. It doesn't have to be that way.

Didn't BG late in life say some odd things about being saved for people who do not know Christ?

Its like in Iran and Egypt where people are having Jesus dreams and Jesus is showing up to some people. So much so, that many mosques are closing. Iran is in a revival right now.

Well that is nice news to hear.
If Jesus is showing up, then they get to know Him, and get saved.
But BG was saying Jesus was not showing Himself to unsaved people and they might still be saved, which is unscriptural for adults.
I tend to have a different POV of infants and young children, that God reveals to them Christ and they believe and are saved before they die.
Like this, Jesus says God has perfected praise in little children.

Matthew 21
12 Then Jesus went into the temple [d]of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. 13 And He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’ ”

14 Then the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed them. 15 But when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that He did, and the children crying out in the temple and saying, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were [e]indignant 16 and said to Him, “Do You hear what these are saying?”

And Jesus said to them, “Yes. Have you never read,

‘Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants
You have perfected praise’?”
17 Then He left them and went out of the city to Bethany, and He lodged there.

One of John MacArthur Quotes.
By John MacArthur

It is not uncommon for unbelievers to mask themselves as Christians. Unfortunately, it also is not uncommon for Christians to wear the world’s masks. Christians want to enjoy the world’s entertainment, the world’s fashions, the world’s vocabulary, the world’s music, and many of the world’s attitudes, even when those things clearly do not conform to the standards of God’s Word. That sort of living is wholly unacceptable to God.

I miss MacArthur.

I didn't like the way he criticized others and it seemed prideful during some of the conferences between him and others is just human and typical bantering back and forth.

Overall, I appreciate his teachings and I think many, many will still learn from him even after his passing.

RC Sproul, too. He will always be a favorite. He also struggled with smoking for forty years. I do not struggle with vaping. I just choose to.
