In contrast to the popular exhortation to “keep looking up” (from ourselves to Christ), we are to “keep looking down” (from our position in Him) upon our circumstances here on the earth! –Miles J. Stanford
The Holy Spirit works patiently and thoroughly in Christians that know the increase of spiritual growth that comes from realizing the consistency between the believer and God! This unbreakable permanency stands in the faith of the surety that God always hears our prayers, which are most effective when directed from our “position” in the Lord Jesus in Heaven (Eph 2:6), against our condition (the negativity of our “old man” i.e. our sin nature) here on the earth.
It is the “finished” work of the Cross (Jhn 19:30) for the old man, who is always under “crucifixion” (Ro 6:6). It is our part to just believe this and hold on to it; even if we’re not in a trial, but especially when we are going through a difficulty.
The old man is always restrained from the ability to cause Christians to want to sin. The issue isn’t so much about sinning—but not wanting to sin, which is always!
