I was going to journal this but will instead depart from my usual cerebral analysis of objective matters and share a personal story to keep in mind whenever the world talks about how innocent children are. Being children of Adam and Eve, we are born children of flesh and sin. Tonight's cast of characters:
At the playground fun was had by all until it wasn't. For no apparent reason, Barrett was in anguish. I saw no blood. No bruise. No redness in his face. He wasn't holding a body part. His big brother JJ was not near bullying him. The sound coming from the child was horrifying torment. The look on his anguished face would melt the most cold blooded among us. Not really able to run being so little, he quickly walked off the playground toward the parking lot.
His devoted father left a couple of minutes early to get something from the car. But he didn't tell his youngest son. Not that I'm an expert but it seemed like separation anxiety to me. Fast forward a couple of hours. We were at an ice cream parlor. All the kids got twice as much ice cream as they could reasonably eat and were no longer eating. At some point, the father decided enough was enough. Time to go home. He threw away what remained uneaten of Barrett's dessert. The kid expressed being violated, screaming at the top of his lungs in rage all the way to the parking lot. Completely inconsolable. My heart ached for his distress.
The antagonists added insult to injury. As we walked from the ice cream parlor, Harvey went up to him and unmercifully mocked him. I thought he was her friend?!
Being nearly deaf, I could not make out her words. However, her mother rebuked her immediately and very strongly. Harvey immediately repeated the unmerciful mocking. This triggered another very strong rebuke by her mother, who required her to hold her hand the rest of the way. In the parking lot, knowing it was time to part, Barrett was calm and lovingly gave me a kiss. The kids hugged each other and me. When Barrett went to hug me, JJ grabbed him from behind and threw him to the ground like it was a wrestling match.
This details the evil they do right in front of their parents! Cruelty is not tempered by the young. As soon as they are able, they show the darker side of the human condition. I shudder to think what they'd do if their parents weren't present. My mind thought of the Lord of the Flies. Cute, young and little with the capacity for evil present. What have you experienced?
- Barrett. 3 yo boy. protagonist
- JJ. 4 yo boy. antagonist
