In this section of the gospel of Mark, "one of the teachers of religious law" asks this question of Jesus: "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?" In His answer, Jesus begins with the Shema from Deuteronomy 6:4-5--which is a prayer that devoted Jews repeat each day. Then He says: "And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength. The second is equally important: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' No other commandment is greater than these."

Interestingly, the Shema does not speak of loving God with our minds. What do you all think it means to love our Lord with all our hearts, all our souls, all our minds and all our strengths?

God is the God of rightness. If you don't put rightness first, it doesn't matter much what you do instead.

I heard a brilliant sermon on that subject recently - it was from a church link that @Nancy sent me privately - if I remember rightly it came from a different angle - I don't think I made any notes ( which I should have and intended to listen to it again ) Nancy any chance of posting a link here, just in case anyone wants to listen to it and voice their thoughts xx

I think it means that God is adding another dimension to our walk....that of the Spirit. It goes with the 4 dimensions in Ephesians 3

    18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;
19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

That 4th dimension in the Spirit is love....agape.

Here is the Church's link. You could look at past sermons...I THINK the one I gave you might have been from the series "Psalms For Summer" not certain.

The following was from last summer from one of our younger pastors. It is excellent...I have watched it like 3 or 4 times and want ALL of my nieces and nephews to see it. It is not just for the younger but for ANYBODY who is still attempting to fill that God shaped vacuum with things of this world. It's awesome!

'Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
    Jesus said unto him,
"Thou shalt love the Lord thy God
    ..
    with all thy heart,
    ....
    and with all thy soul,
    ......
    and with all thy mind.
This is the first and great commandment.
And the second is like unto it,
.. Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.'

    (Matthew 22:36-40)

    'Hear, O Israel:
The LORD our God is one LORD:
And thou shalt love the LORD thy God

    .. with all thine heart,
.... and with all thy soul,
...... and with all thy might.
    (Deuteronomy 6:4-5)

    Hello @Lady Crosstalk,

Interesting. I notice that whereas in Matthew it says, 'with all thy mind', Deuteronomy says, 'with all thy might'. I suppose might emanates from the mind, for as it is said, 'we are what we think'.

We are told to be renewed
'in the spirit our your mind' in Ephesians 4:23. If our minds are stayed on Christ, at God's right hand, and occupied with walking in newness of life before Him, as those who have been raised from the dead. Then our minds will be occupied with Him, and with the Father, and our desire will be to please Him. When we think of the love of God, in Christ Jesus, which was the motive for taking upon Himself the form of a man and coming to the earth to die that we may live, then love for Him will become the motive for all our actions too. Won't it? :)

    Praise God!

    Just thoughts.
    Thank you for prompting them.
    In Christ Jesus
    Chris

"No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon." Matt 6:24
