Have you heard about the New World screwworm?

It is a parasitic fly. It has orange eyes, a metallic green body with 3 stripes.
It's not the first time North and South America has been infected. But they were able to eradicate it back in the 50's but they are making a comeback.
This could be serious.
I'm just posting so we have some awareness and what to watch out for.
I know a lot of us have pets, and Dogs, Cats, Ferrets, and Humans can be prone to these nasty things.
But they mostly hang out with our livestock in the southwest regions like NM and TX.

All of the Government Agencies, FDA, USDA, CDC, etc are working to maintain and again try to eradicate this problem.

So please do me a favor, don't start crying about the cost of beef.
Understand the seriousness of the matter.
Thank You

Hugs

The Asian giant hornet (Vespa mandarinia), also known as the northern giant hornet, is the world's largest hornet. It is native to temperate and tropical East Asia, South Asia, mainland Southeast Asia, and parts of the Russian Far East. It was also briefly found in the Pacific Northwest of North America from late 2019 but was eradicated by December 2024.

These hornets prayed on other insects and rodents. It was attacking our honey bees.

FDA said fly bait kills too many good flies, that was funny!

Screw worm flies eat all flesh, dogs, cats, horses, pigs, cattle, and people.
Years ago they were eradicated down to Panama, and people got lazy and lax and let them come back.

I think cold winters keep them from spreading far north.

Clinical Presentation

Cochliomyia hominivorax larvae are highly destructive and tear into the host’s tissue with sharp mouth hooks, causing wounds and sores to expand in size and depth. As the larvae develop and feed, affected areas become painful, swollen, and may bleed or produce a foul odor; larvae are typically visible in the wound oriented head-down with their posterior spiracles exposed. Infestation of the mucosa and subsequent destruction of oral, nasal, and ocular tissues may also occur.

Untreated infestations are potentially fatal. Bacterial superinfections may also occur in C. hominivorax-infested sites. If left unattended, facultative myiasis-associated species can eventually become attracted to the deteriorating wound site and may co-infest New World screwworm lesions. Some important risk factors for infestation among persons living in or traveling to endemic regions include proximity to livestock, exposed open wounds, and sleeping outdoors. A reduced ability to deter the fly and attend to wounds also makes infants and the very elderly or infirm more vulnerable to infestation.

Additional clinical information on risk, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention can be found on the Clinical Overview of New World Screwworm page.

I thought it was fake when I first heard about them and then started digging a little.
It's not fake.
There is something they can use, but it seems Rollins up at the AG dept, is sitting on it. Not sure why.

I just wanted people to be mindful of their pets and stuff if they live in that neck of the woods.
I hope they fix it before it spreads.
Thank you

Once you have them eating you on the inside, nothing can be done, you will definitely die in agony unless doctors can treat this.

'Man-eating' parasite that was once extinct returns as woman dies in days

The flesh-eating parasite was thought to have been eradicated but has made a gruesome comeback, devouring one woman's lungs while another blew maggots out of her nose

A 'man-eating' parasite, once thought to be extinct, has made a terrifying comeback, killing one woman and infecting many more.

In horrifying scenes, Reina Avila, 57, was given a tissue by a nurse to blow her nose and was appalled to discover three live maggots. A nurse warned her that there might be hundreds more within her body, poised to lay eggs, all caused by the screw worm fly.

Reina recounted her ordeal to the Daily Telegraph: "During the bus ride, some of the worms had ventured into my mouth," she said. "I've been sneezing a lot, and every time some comes out. It's been two days now. The pain in my head is intense. It makes me wince. I can feel them in my nose because it's so sensitive.

"I can feel them moving. I can sense them, like they are forcing their way higher into my nose. I've no idea why I was targeted, maybe it happened while I was asleep. What can I do?"
