Hello Hepzibah,@My Dreams
It could very well be vitamin B12 deficiency that does not show up in bloods. His symptoms are found with that.
There is a book called 'Could it be B12' for education.
yes thanks!, wife told when I was not at home he was crying due to pain , he called my nephew so he took and gave him a pain relief injection.I'm praying for that sweet man.
Hi Nancy as the book I mentioned says, it does not always show up in bloods as what gets into the cells is the important thing and B12 transport and absorption are complicated. It is common for people to find that taking the activated B12 - methylcobalamin in shots or oils, not the hydroxy oral kind, will make a big difference especially for the elderly.Hello Hepzibah,
I worked in a hospital for decades and Vitamin B12 deficiency is definitely indicated by blood. We drew them all the time.
Here's a breakdown:
"Vitamin B12 Blood Test: This is a direct measure of the amount of B12 in your blood.
Confirmatory Tests
- Complete Blood Count (CBC):This test checks for anemia, a common sign of B12 deficiency.
- Macrocytic Anemia: A CBC may show an enlarged size of red blood cells (high Mean Corpuscular Volume or MCV), indicating macrocytic anemia.
- Hypersegmented Neutrophils: A peripheral blood smear (examined as part of the CBC) may show abnormally segmented neutrophils.
If the initial tests are unclear, or the B12 level is borderline, your provider may order:
Tests for Pernicious Anemia
- Methylmalonic Acid (MMA) Test:
Elevated MMA levels are a highly sensitive indicator of a B12 deficiency, even when serum B12 levels are only slightly low.
- Homocysteine Test:
This test also detects increased homocysteine, another marker that can indicate a B12 deficiency.
If your provider suspects pernicious anemia, they may order:
Just FYI.
- Intrinsic Factor Antibody (IFAB) Test: This test looks for antibodies that interfere with vitamin B12 absorption and can help confirm a pernicious anemia diagnosis.
Hope and well desires for you and your family also.Friends, dad is saying he is not able o stand up and walk now. He is having pain and problems in nerves.
