Mark 4:

1 Again He began to teach by the sea. And such a very large crowd gathered to Him that He got into a boat on the sea and sat down; and the whole crowd was by the sea on the land.

Jesus Christ began to teach near the sea of Galilee.

There was a very large crowd gathered to the Lord and He got into a boat on the sea and sat down;

and the whole crowd was by the sea on the land. (Maybe Jesus was near the entrance of a cove that His words spoken reverberated unto the crowd as he taught.)

2 And He was teaching them many things in parables, and was saying to them in His teaching,

Jesus taught them many things in parables, and was saying to them in His teaching.

3 “Listen to this! Behold, the sower went out to sow;

Listen to this! Behold the sower went out to sow;
Right now speaking the sower in Christ Jesus; sowing seeds towards many people listening right now at this moment in time as we are reading and He is teaching them from the boat He had entered to all on the land.

4 as he was sowing, some seed fell beside the road, and the birds came and ate it up.

As Jesus was sowing; some of the seeds fell on the roadside,
So some of the seeds fell on the roadside (journey),
and the birds came and ate it up.

The fowls of the air is sometimes represents that of bad. So people who heard the word down the journey heard it but because others along their way came and misguided them off the path which is directing to the one who can save them (Jesus Christ).

Especially in this time with Satan and his demons running around in this context.

5 Other seed fell on the rocky ground where it did not have much soil; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of soil.

Other seed fell on rocky ground; Other type of seed of the similar type fell on the rocky ground are those who heard and received the word with joy but the seed was not dug very deep into their heart. It sprang up for a moment but it had no deep roots.

6 And when the sun had risen, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.

When people received the news: Then persecution arose in their life for having the good news; they were scorched and burned because of others in their mocking and trying to chase after other things to please other people instead of God. They in their received news withered away. Their faith died and they were spiritually quenched from what they originally had received word of.

7 Other seed fell among the thorns, and the thorns came up and choked it, and it yielded no crop.

When people who heard the word; who had harden hearts: thorns came and choked it because of the chasing after other things besides the Lord Himself. So in their life the seed did not grow and there was no crop to harvest.

8 Other seeds fell into the good soil, and as they grew up and increased, they yielded a crop and produced thirty, sixty, and a hundred times as much.”

When people heard the word and received it and cherished and searched and sought to keep it watered and fed the word was received into their heart, and the seed with-in them (spirit) started to grow; and even through all the storms and weather and hardships even persecution they continued to grow and increase spiritually into maturity as thus a fully grown flower from a small seed to a fully grown flower in which they were able to yield a crop that produced an harvest, even it is small a harvest is still created with-in the persons life of faith in Christ Jesus.

9 And He was saying, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Jesus said let those who have ears to hear; let him hear.

What are your thoughts on these passages? In verse 13-20 Jesus explains it very clearly, but reading these first passages before hand what are your thoughts?

I think when I initially heard them I thought of a literal garden. It is so nice when the actual definition is given isn't it Matt. Sometimes that even isn't enough though. Look at how many have no idea what the lake of fire is, even though in both places it is mentioned in the Bible, the meaning is given.
