Greetings my brothers and sisters in the name of our Great Lord and savior Jesus Christ. Not many Christians today know or have even heard of the “Great Lisbon Earthquake” which happened on November 1, 1755 or the Dark Day in History which occured on May 19th 1780 let alone the implication it has in regards to bible prophecy. Rev 6:12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; Rev 6:13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. Rev 6:14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. The Great Lisbon Earthquake. On November 1, 1755 at around 9:40 a massive earthquake rocked the city of Lisbon, the following tsunami and fire caused near-total destruction leaving in its wake an estimated death toll of 60,000 to 100,000 people dead. Geologists estimate today that the Lisbon earthquake would have rated 9 on the Richter scale with the epicenter in the Atlantic Ocean about 200km west southwest of the Cape St. Vincent. So the question is why would I try to attach this event to the above prophecy? Why not some other earthquake; After all there have been other earthquakes that have kill more people an cause more destruction. Well according to that same prophecy cretin events happen in succession of each other. The Dark Day.Most of you I am sure have heard it said on many occasions that” Jesus is coming soon” maybe from Your parents, Pastor, perhaps even an Elder, Deacon maybe even a close friend or Stranger, but how soon, is soon! On May 19th 1780; known as” The Dark Day”.History records a great darkness, that rendered the day hideously dark beyond anything anyone have ever experience in recorded history. Millions of people saw it. From evening time until after midnight, not even one ray of light could pass thugh the thick darkness.Soon after the event it was dubbed “the blackness of darkness!” one eye-witness Said "I Could not help conceiving, at the time, that if every luminous body in the universe Had been shrouded in impenetrable darkness, or struck out of existence, the darkness could not have been more complete." All of this took place on May 19th 1780, 25 years after what we know now as the “Great Lisbon Earthquake”. If I where to be finished at this point you could look at me and say “well what Happen to the Moon turning into blood? And all the other stuff” and you would be right to do so. The next thing that Rev 6:12 said would happen isRev 6:12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal… and the moon became as blood; Now after midnight the moon could be seen as it was fully dark still but as one eye-witness said, "it had not the least effect to dispel the death-like shadows.” However the darkness disappeared after some time, and then the moon, when first visible, had the appearance of blood. The next event to take place was a meteor shower which took place on November 13, 1833 and known as “The Great Leonid Meteor Storm of 1833” which covered the sky in a wonderful array lights.Rev 6:13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. Since the last of these events in this prophecy it has been 175 years. The last and final events of this prophecy is as followsRev 6:14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. Rev 6:15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; Rev 6:16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: Rev 6:17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand? Let us all hope we will be ready for this day when out Great Lord and savior comes to take us home.Amen

Interesting and I cant deny this may have been a warning from God as we are told there will be signs in the heavens but I can not agree this was the 6th trump. For several reason one Israel had to become a Nation again before the count down could even began this did not happen until May 1948 this is the parable of the fig tree and sets the Generation for End time events. Secondly at the End of the 5th trump Antichrist/Satan is kicked out of heaven to earth the 6th trump is this time of the great tribulation and it falls on the Entire World not a single place.Your latter verse's are talking about the preparing for the 7th trump which is Gods Wrath at his second coming and that wrath is against Satan/Antichrist and his followers. third none of this can occur until after the two wittiness's appear in Jerusalem are killed and lay dead in the street for 3 1/2 days.

Isaiah 66:8 - Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? or shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children.

Your Right Revelations is not written in chronological order... if your asking me the same question I ask this is my answer. as for how I know this all took place. It’s simply where else in history did the sun turn black and the moon when risen turned to blood? and the events before and after this match what Rev 6 is talking about [IMG]

All the events in Rev. are not in order but the trumps 1-7 are in order the trumpet is blown to hail action the Trumps from first to last are in order. It is the Parable of the fig tree that tells you that Israel must become a nation first the only Parable God told us to learn.http://www.christianityboard.com/parable-f...10815#post10815Israel is our clock.

The Fig Tree In Matthew 24 : 32; Jesus used the descriptive analogy of a "fig tree", to instruct his disciples about how we could discern the timeliness of his return to Israel. "Now learn a parable of the fig tree; when his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh:" The fig trees of the middle east region are a fruit- producing tree or shrub. The size of the tree, and the capacity to produce figs depends mainly on the soil that the tree is rooted in. Typically, the fig tree blooms before sprouting forth its leaves in the spring, and normally would produce, not one, but two crops of figs each year. In Mark 11:13 Jesus, after leaving Bethany, which is just to the east of Jerusalem; saw a fig tree off in the distance, and noticed the leaves that were thereon; and eagerly looked forward to partaking of the fruit of it as he neared it; yet when finally arriving at the tree, he found there was no fruit upon it; for the time for figs was not yet in season. Upon seeing that the fig tree produced no fruit, Jesus cursed the tree, with the disciples standing by observing. He then proceeded on down to the city of Jerusalem, and into the Temple, whereupon he flew into a rage, chasing out the moneychangers, and calling the holy place nothing more than a den of thieves. The disciples must have thought these actions were the actions of a madman. Afterall, what sane person talks to a tree and pronounces a curse upon it for heaven's sake? I believe that everything in the Bible, and in the entire life of Jesus has an divinely intended purpose or message. I don't think God wastes his words, nor would Jesus have behaved in such a manner without it having some meritorious meaning. But, try to imagine the disciples astonishment, when out on the same road back to Bethany, they pass right by that very same fig tree, and lo and behold, it has already withered up and dried. Why would Jesus curse a fig tree? During the first dispersion of Israel, God sent a vision to the old prophet Jeremiah, of two baskets full of figs. One of the baskets had good figs while the other basket contained bad figs. Jeremiah 24:5-7: Thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel; Like these good figs, so will I acknowledge them that are carried away captive of Judah, whom I have sent out of this place into the land of the Chaldeans, for their good. For I will set mine eyes upon them for good, and I will bring them again to this land: and I will build them, and not pull them down, and I will plant them, and not pluck them up. And I will give them an heart to know me, that "I AM" the Lord: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God: for they shall return unto me with their whole heart. Here, in these verses, God likens the captive exiles of Israel to the those good figs in the basket. The Jewish remnant which was still left in Jerusalem, God likens to the bad, or evil figs retained in the second basket. I should point out that Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon rose up against Israel and took captive all the children of Israel except those princes who were left as mere puppet rulers in the holy city. The year of Israel's defeat by Babylon was 606 B.C. Then nineteen years later in 587 B.C. Nebuchadnezzar returned back to Jerusalem and destroyed the city and executed King Zedekiah. Remember those dates and the differential of the years as you read further in this newsletter. I have a point that I want to make clear later concerning that time interval. Anyway, God promised through Jeremiah that he would return Israel once again into the land, and afterwards that Israel shall no more be uprooted from the promised land; and that He would write his law in their hearts. This promised of course dream has never been fulfilled during the long history of Israel. It is still a future eventuality. But the fact has been historically established that Israel has forever become prophetically typecast, in a figurative sense, as a fig tree. As Simeon was promised to not see death until he had seen the Messiah, also the rebudded generation of regathered Israel will see all things fulfilled before it passes. ( Matt 24:34 ) "Now learn a parable of the fig tree; when his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh:" The Fig Tree is planted once again in its natural homeland, it is ALIVE, and the blossoms are budding forth, and it signifies that the Branch shall returneth soon! This is the Only Parable God told us to learn

Jeremiah 24:5-7 was fulfilled long ago. Anyone can look this up, after the Children of Israel where taken away by Nebuchadnezzar they retuned you can read all the prophecy timelines in the book of Daniel, If you like I can post a detailed study about the carrying away of the children of Israel... else why where they back in Jerusalem in the time of Jesus. And yet again why where they expelled by the Romans in 70AD after the destruction of the Temple if they did not come back... the Jews had controle of Jerusalem before Jesus came the first time. but lost it again As Jesus said.Mat 23:38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. Mat 23:39 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.Sorry Kriss I am not trying to put you in a hard place here buddy just don’t see what you saying.

Sorry Kriss I ma not trying to put you in a hard place here buddy just dotn see what you saying I have posted both verses below and i still cant see anything that talks about Israel.Mat 21:20 And when the disciples saw it, they marvelled, saying, How soon is the fig tree withered away! Mat 21:21 Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done. Mat 21:22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive. Mat 24:32 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: Mat 24:33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.Matthew 15:24 - But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

Couple quick things here. Revelation is "out of order" in one sense but certainly not in another. The presence of sequential numbering of 7 vials, 7 seals, and 7 trumps would leave one very hard-pressed to turn these into something out of order. The three sevens are broken down into a serious of seven events culminating with the 7th of each being the return of our Lord. The Lisbon earthquake hardly fulfills Joel 2.Joel 2:1-11Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand; A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations. A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them. The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run. Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array. Before their face the people shall be much pained: all faces shall gather blackness. They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks: Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk every one in his path: and when they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded. They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief. The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining: And the LORD shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?[/quote]And we go on down.Joel 2:31
The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.
Going on to Revelation, it'd be another case of a very loose fulfillment based upon some observations by a few folks involved in it. Believe me when I say this beloved that when this 6th trump does go forth and the Earth quakes like it never has, there's not going to be a debate amongst the faithful. As to the generation of the fig tree, go on to:Matthew 24:29-30
Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
In your above Scripture, you left out the important verse!Matthew 24:32-34
Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.
Contrary to what those folks who would muddy the waters say, this generation of the fig tree is the generation of the rebirth of Israel as a state. For God is the God of the living and he is the living Word.

Just because Revelations is not written in chronological order don’t mean it’s not historical in some parts...As for the prophecy I am sure that we are debate this along time, however I in fact believe that there will also be a future fulfillment of the same prophecy that will take place in rapid succession. But that does not mean that this is not a duel prophecy [IMG]Be that as it may that my presentation of this topic is week from a theological stand point is still don’t take away form that fact that it may be a duel prophecy as I said before. But as for the fig tree thing, to me that makes no sense to me... Jesus was never referring to the Jewish nation in that parable, I am sorry [IMG]

Well as I said in my first answer I can not say this wasnt a sign or a or type as you will for the bible is full of them but that does not change the fact that the trumps are in order and we are told that the tribulation/that is the man of sin, son of perdition must come first (2 Thess.)Ask yourself this we know the Antichrist rules from Jerusalem the two wittness's lay dead in the street for 3 days's (its not the ot and nt) as they can not be killed and resurected nor can they shut off the rain)So Jerusalem had to restored for these things to occurI cant do anything about you not getting the parable as the reason its in Parable form is to keep those that are not ready from understanding them. So if you dont get it I can only say keep studing,it will come. We are here to help with that.No one knows the hour or the day of his coming but we are told to know the season and it is this parable that tells us the season. And we are in it in fact its 60 years old. I have given you Denvers study, a christian/Jewish study heres another simpliar study that may help.

Parable of the Fig Tree --------------------------------------------------------------------------------PARABLE OF THE FIG TREE(A Parable God tells Us To Learn)------------------------------------------------Everyday its seems we hear or see somthing else about the "END TIMES".We watch to see if God's prophecy's are being played out on the world stage.God tells us that no one knows the hour or day of the return of Christ. However he tells us we should watch and know the season, just as we know when the leaves turn colors and begin to fall, that the seasons are going to change,God tells us to watch for the season of the "End Times"Matthew 24, Mark 13 ,Luke 21, all tell us of the signs of this season, there will be false prophets, wars, rumors of wars, and earthquakesbut these things have always been so how do we know when we are supposed to start watching for this particular season? When being asked of these things Jesus gave a parableLuke 21:29 And he spake to them a parable;Behold the fig tree, and all the trees;Luke29:30 When they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selvesthat summer is now nigh at hand.Luke29:31: So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand.Luke29:32 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilledA parable is simular to a riddle meaning there is a mystery or hidden meaning in the words. It is saying more than the surface words. So what does this riddle say? It has long been understood by biblical scholars that trees represent"Nations" and the "Fig Tree" represents IsraelSo taking this into account the parable would now read:Behold Israel, and all the NationsWhen they come forth, yea shall know the season is at handSo likewise when you see these things come to pass, know that the kingdom of God is close at handI say unto you,This generation shall not pass away till all things be fufilledNow that we know what the parable says lets inspect it futher. Behold Israel.Israel became a nation, for the first time since Christ's time on May 14,1948 (U.N ratified 1947)NationsThese are the nations that the bible says exsist in the end timesGenerationWhat Generation is it speaking of? the generation that see's Israel become a Nation So we can now see that the Parable of the Fig Tree tells us that the generation that saw the 1948 formation of the state of Israel is the generation that will see the "End Time events and the return of Christ.A generation in the bible is 40 years,70 years,or 120 years.Although we can not completely rule out 120 year generation people in our day do not normally live to 120 years old so it would seem that 40 years or 70 years would be more likely however 40 years has already passed, so by process of elimination we are left with 70 year Generation. God does not say he will wait the full 70 years, only that the generation will not all pass away before the end comes. We are fast aproaching the 70th year May14, 2008 will complete 60 years of the 70 year generation. And the 70 years ends May 14,2018There is another important date that we are approaching that may shed more light on where we stand in the time line.East Jerusalem was part of the so called occupied territories untill the Six Day War of June 5,1967. When Israel finally took position of all of Jerusalam.Which completed the current day state of Israel. In June 2007 Israel will celebrate the 40 year aniversery of the possession of Jerusalam.Forty(40) is an important number in Gods word and often signifies completeness or fullness of time.kriss

Revelation 6:12 "And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;"Revelation 6:13 "And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely [unripe] figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind."Word References:"untimely figs" - 3653 olunthos (ol'-oon-thos); of uncertain derivation; an unripe (because out of season) fig: KJV-- untimely fig.The trouble starts in heaven, as it is written in Revelation 12:7-9, where Michael casts Satan upon the earth. When Satan is gone, then there is peace in heaven, but woe to them on the earth for his destination is earth. These are the "untimely figs" which are harvested out of season. Jesus talks about this in Mark 13:24, and it this will be covered in detail in Revelation 12. This covers the second advent [coming of Christ], and these figs [people] who claim the name of Christ, yet do not know God's Word, nor His times and seasons. These people will be taken by the Antichrist [out of season]. God's elect will not be taken out of season, but will stand all events and allow the Spirit to give answer for them.Mark 13:27 says, "And then shall He send his angels and shall gather together His elect..." This is what many call the "rapture", and but it's not hard to figure out something is missing here in that theory. Christ is coming here to earth; they are not leaving to go anywhere. The "four winds" are the four spirits at the end of this earth age. This is discussed in Revelation 7.Mark 13:28 "Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near:" Christ cursed this tree, whereby it will never bring forth fruit, but only leaves. Summer is the time when God will gather His elect. The fruit is in season, and the fruit is ripe.Mark 13:29 "So ye in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it [He] is nigh, even at the door." Jesus Christ said to learn and know about this fig tree. This parable started in the Garden of Eden, between Eve and Satan, and from that sexual [yes sexual] relations came Cain. The offspring of Cain, and his father Satan [not Adam] became the race of people called the "Kenites". See Strong's Hebrew dictionary, #7014; "Qayn, Kajin, the name of the first child, an oriental tribe: Cain, Kenite[-s]."These "Kenites" took over the scribe duties from the Levites, as recorded in First Chronicles 2:55, and the priest duties as recorded in Ezra 2:43-65. They mixed with the people of Judah, and even called themselves "Jews", taking the name which did not belong to them. Matthew 13:39 even identifies them as children of the devil. These are the people (the kenites) who plotted and killed Jesus and Judas, and are referred to in Revelation chapters 2, and 3, by their saying, "they are of Judah, when in fact they are not." If you are to understand any of the prophecy of the final days, you must know who these people are. You must know how they operate, and just why they do what they do. They are the negative part of God's plan, and God's people are not to harm them in any way, in fact, because of the plan to use Judah as their shield, they are well hidden. To pull or try to gather these tares, from among the wheat, damages the wheat. Christ instructed us to leave them alone: Matthew 13:29-30 "But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.[29] Let both grow together until the harvest: [30]" However, when you know them, you are not taken in by them. The Kenites are Satan's physical kids on earth, and in Matthew 13:14-15 Jesus told His disciples that it is part of prophecy that the Kenites do not understand. For if they did, they would repent and Jesus would have to save them, which many will in the Millennium for God is always fair in His ways. You now have the key that opens many doors of understanding if your eyes are spiritually capable of seeing it. It's a spiritual insight; you either see it, or you do not. This is what the Churches of Smyrna and Philadelphia understood. That these Kenites were in their midst; that they were the offspring of Satan, and that they also altered doctrine of the churches in the final days, and that the other five churches would follow the first Christ on the scene, the Antichrist. Is this what your church teaches?God is pleased with churches [Christians] that seek the truth, and not accept man's traditional teaching, such as Easter [Ishtar], and the rapture theory without documenting it through God's Word. Mark 13:30 "Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done." This generation that shall not pass away started either on May 15, 1948 at the founding of the nation of Israel or after the war of 1967 when the Jews took Jerusalem, and must come to a close very shortly. This is why the things mentioned in end time prophecy seem so common and not mystical, for your living your life in that time. Those thing are happening in government, on the news, in the schools and even in many of our homes. http://www.theseason.org/revelation/revelation6.htm

Not many Christians today know or have even heard of the “Great Lisbon Earthquake” which happened on November 1, 1755 or the Dark Day in History which occured on May 19th 1780 let alone the implication it has in regards to bible prophecy.
I have heard of them, many many years ago in fact. Yes, there is possible implication. However, it remains only as possible IMO at this time. Since it has been years since I have even thought of these until just recently I shared them with another as food for thought only. While they were indeed interesting, without some further and supporting documentation as to how widespread some of these things were, I can not accept them at this time. Further, there are too many unknown factors with regard to some of them. However, more demoninations came out of that time period than any other single time period in history that I am aware of.I will expand upon what you have already presented, perhaps it will simply mirror what you have put forth, perhaps it will embellish that which you have presented.(atrhick)
Vincent.
"One of the most extensively felt earthquakes ever recorded occurred November 1, 1755. Extending over an area of at least four million square miles, it covered the greater part of Europe, Africa, and America. Seventy thousand people were killed. In Lisbon, Portugal violent shaking lasted for at least six minutes, destroying most of the city. The sea rose fifty feet above its ordinary level. Encyclopaedia Britannica called it 'the most famous of all earthquakes.' G. A. Eiby, in About Earthquakes, referred to it as 'the greatest earthquake on record.'"Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica (1961 ed.), Vol. 7, p. 848."Probably the most famous of all earthquakes is that which destroyed Lisbon on Nov. 1, 1755. There were three great earthquakes (the first was the largest) at 9:40 A.M., 10 A.M. and at noon. The main shock lasted six to seven minutes, an unusually long duration. Within six minutes at least 30,000 people were killed, all large public buildings and 12,000 dwellings were demolished. It was a church day, and great loss of life occurred in the churches. A fire followed which burned for six days. A marble quay at the riverside disappeared into the river bottom laden with people. Alexander von Humboldt stated that the total area shaken was four times that of Europe."Source: G. A. Eiby, About Earthquakes (New York: Harper, 1957), pp. 141, 142."By far the most spectacular earthquake of earlier times was that of Lisbon, in 1755. This has some claim to be regarded as the greatest earthquake on record. If it is possible to believe reports, the felt area, which was certainly more than 700 miles in radius, extended from the Azores to Italy, and from England to North Africa. A source of confusion in the reports of this shock, which makes it difficult to judge the real extent of the felt area, was the widespread occurrence of seiches,...wave movements in ponds and lakes...Oscillations of this kind were observed in France, Italy, Holland, Switzerland, and England, and reports of the movements even came from Norway and Sweden, at a distance of nearly 1800 miles from the epicentre. In those countries, however, the shock was certainly not felt...In 1755, the damage to Lisbon itself was very great. At that time, the city had about 230,000 inhabitants, nearly 30,000 of whom were killed, according to conservative estimates. Great numbers of people were in the churches, for it was All Saints’ Day, and the time of the first Mass. The shock was followed by a tsunami (tidal wave:) about twenty feet in height, and by fire. The disaster shocked all Europe, and the moralists and the wiseacres were not slow to make capital of it."(atrhick)
The Dark Day.On May 19th 1780; known as” The Dark Day”.History records a great darkness, that rendered the day hideously dark beyond anything anyone have ever experience in recorded history.
"The United States had barely been born when on May 19, 1780 it witnessed what has been remembered in history as the great Dark Day. According to the Boston Gazette, 'there was the appearance of midnight at noonday.' The darkness began around 10 a.m. Candles were lighted; animals thought it was night. The Connecticut Historical Collections describes the tension in the state legislature where, 'a very general opinion prevailed, that the day of judgment was at hand.' The poet John Greenleaf Whittier called it 'a horror of great darkness.'""The Collections of the Massachusetts Historical Society, referring to the Dark Day, contains this record: 'The darkness of the following evening was probably as gross as ever has been observed... If every luminous body in the universe had been shrouded in impenetrable shades, or struck out of existence, the darkness could not have been more complete. A sheet of white paper held within a few inches of the eyes was equally invisible with the blackest velvet... This gross darkness held ‘till about one o’clock, although the moon had fulled but the day before.'"Source: The Boston Gazette and the Country Journal, May 29, 1780, p. 4."About eleven o’clock the darkness was such as to demand our attention, and put us upon making observations. At half past eleven, in a room with three windows, 24 panes each, all open towards the south-east and south, large print could not be read by persons of good eyes. About twelve o’clock the windows being still open, a candle cast a shade so well defined on the wall, as that profiles were taken with as much ease as they could have been in the night. About one o’clock a glin of light which had continued ‘till this time in the east, shut in, and the darkness was greater than it had been for any time before, Between one and two o’clock, the wind from the west freshened a little, and a glin appeared in that quarter. We dined about two the windows all open, and two candles burning on the table. In the time of the greatest darkness some of the dunghill fowls went to their roost: Cocks crowed in answer to one another as they commonly do in the night: Woodcocks, which are night birds, whistled as they do only in the dark: Frogs peeped In short, there was the appearance of midnight at noonday."Source: Samuel Williams (a Harvard professor), Memoirs of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences: to the End of the Year 1783 (Boston: Adams and Nourse, 1785), Vol. 1. pp. 234, 235.[p. 234] "People were unable to read common print determine the time of day by their [p. 235] clocks or watches dine or manage their domestic business, without the light of candles. In some places, the darkness was so great, that persons could not see to read common print in the open air, for several hours together."Source: Timothy Dwight, quoted in Connecticut Historical Collections, compiled by John Warner Barber (2d ed.; New Haven: Durrie & Peck and J. W. Barber, 1836), p. 403."The 19th of May, 1780, was a remarkable dark day. Candles were lighted in many houses; the birds were silent and disappeared, and the fouls retired to roost. The legislature of Connecticut was then in session at Hartford. A very general opinion prevailed, that the day of judgment was at hand. The House of Representatives, being unable to transact their business, adjourned. A proposal to adjourn the council was under consideration. When the opinion of Colonel [Abraham] Davenport was asked, he answered, 'I am against an adjournment. The day of judgment is either approaching, or it is not. If it is not, there is no cause for an adjournment: if it is, I choose to be found doing my duty. I wish therefore that candles may be brought.'"Source: John Greenleaf Whittier, "Abraham Davenport," in his Complete Poetical Works (Cambridge ed.; Boston: Houghton, 1894), p. 260."‘Twas on a May-day of the far old year Seventeen hundred eighty, that there fell Over the bloom and sweet life of the Spring, Over the fresh earth and the heaven of noon, A horror of great darkness. Men prayed, and women wept; all ears grew sharp To hear the doom-blast of the trumpet shatter The black sky, that the dreadful face of Christ Might look from the rent clouds, not as he looked A loving guest at Bethany, but stern As Justice and inexorable Law. Meanwhile in the old State House, dim as ghosts, Sat the lawgivers of Connecticut, Trembling beneath their legislative robes. 'It is the Lord’s Great Day! Let us adjourn,' Some said; and then, as if with one accord, All eyes were turned to Abraham Davenport. He rose, slow cleaving with his steady voice The intolerable hush. 'This well may be The Day of Judgment which the world awaits; But be it so or not, I only know My present duty, and my Lord’s command To occupy till He come. So at the post Where He hath set me in His providence, I choose, for one, to meet Him face to face, No faithless servant frightened from my task, But ready when the Lord of the harvest calls; And therefore, with all reverence, I would say, Let God do His work, we will see to ours. Bring in the candles.'"Source: Discourse by eyewitness Elam Potter, delivered May 28, 1780, in Enfield, Conn., quoted in The Advent Herald, March 13, 1844, p. 46."Perhaps some, by assigning a natural cause of this, ascribing it to the thick vapor in the air, will endeavor to evade the force of its being a sign, but, the same objection will lie against earthquakes being signs which our Lord expressly mentions as such. For my part, I really consider the darkness as one of the prodigies foretold in the text; designed for our admonition, and warning."Question: How widespread was this "Dark Day"? Was it limited unto a small portion of the eastern coast of the U.S.A.?Clearly Massachusetts and Connecticut were affected, but beyond that small area, I have encountered no other records of this event. Thus my skepticism and removing this to only a possibility as opposed to a probability.(atrhick)
Now after midnight the moon could be seen as it was fully dark still but as one eye-witness said, "it had not the least effect to dispel the death-like shadows.” However the darkness disappeared after some time, and then the moon, when first visible, had the appearance of blood. The next event to take place was a meteor shower which took place on November 13, 1833 and known as “The Great Leonid Meteor Storm of 1833” which covered the sky in a wonderful array lights.
"On November 13, 1833, from 2 a.m. until daylight, the sky all over North America was aflame with meteors. One observer remarked, 'It seemed as if the whole starry heavens had congregated at one point near the zenith, and were simultaneously shooting forth, with the velocity of lightning, to every part of the horizon; and yet they were not exhausted.' Astronomer W. J. Fisher, in The Telescope, called it 'the most magnificent meteor shower on record.'"Source: Benjamin Gorton, A View of Spiritual, or Anti-typical Babylon (Troy [N.Y.]: the Author, 1808), p. 73."The second is that of the moon’s turning to blood; this I have not seen, but, from information, I have reason to believe it did take place between 2 o’clock and day break in the morning of the same night after which the sun was darkened, which was said to appear as a clotter of blood; and it is the more probable, as that night, before the moon appeared, was as dark, in proportion, as the day, and of course would give the moon an extraordinary appearance-not suffering her to give her light."Source: Denison Olmsted, "Observations on the Meteors of November 13th, 1833," The American Journal of Science and Arts, 25 ([Jan.?] 1834), 363, 365, 366, 386, 393, 394. [p. 363] "The morning of November 13th, 1833, was rendered memorable by an exhibition of the phenomenon called SHOOTING STARS, which was probably more extensive and magnificent than any similar one hitherto recorded...Probably no celestial phenomenon has ever occurred in this country, since its first settlement, which was viewed with so much admiration and delight by one class of spectators, or with so much astonishment and fear by another class...[p. 365] The reader may imagine a constant succession of fire balls, resembling sky rockets, radiating in all directions from a point in the heavens, a few degrees south-east of the zenith, and following the arch of the sky towards the horizon... The balls, as they travelled down the vault, usually left after them a vivid streak of light, and just before they disappeared, exploded, or suddenly resolved themselves into smoke. No report or noise of any kind was observed, although we listened attentively... The flashes of light, although less intense than lightning, were so bright as to awaken people in their beds. One ball that shot off in the north-west direction, and explo- [p. 366] ded a little northward of the star Capella, left, just behind the place of explosion, a phosphorescent train of peculiar beauty... [p. 386] The meteors began to attract notice by their unusual frequency or brilliancy, from nine to twelve o’clock in the evening, were most striking in their appearance, from two to five, arrived at their maximum, in many places, about four o’clock, and continued till rendered invisible by the light of day" Source: Peter M. Millman, "The Falling of the Stars," The Telescope, 7 (May-June, 1940), 57."To understand the use of the word shower in connection with shooting stars we must go back to the early morning hours of Nov. 13, 1833, when the inhabitants of this continent [of North America] were in fact treated to one of the most spectacular natural displays that the night sky has produced... For nearly four hours the sky was literally ablaze... More than a billion shooting stars appeared over the United States and Canada alone."Source: Denison Olmsted, Letters on Astronomy, Addressed to a Lady: in Which The Elements of the Science Are Familiarly Explained in Connexion With Its Literary History (1840 ed.), pp. 348, 349."The shower pervaded nearly the whole of North America, having appeared in nearly equal splendor from the British possessions on the north to the West-India Islands and Mexico on the South, and from sixty-one degrees of longitude east of the American coast, quite to the Pacific Ocean on the west. Throughout this immense region, the duration was nearly the same."Source: J. T. Buckingham, "The Meteoric Shower," The New-England Magazine, 6 (Jan.-June, 1834), 47, 48."Neither language, nor the pencil, can adequately picture the grandeur and magnificence of the scene... It may be doubted, whether any description has surpassed, in accuracy and impressiveness, that of the old negro in Virginia, who remarked 'It is awful, indeed, sir, it looked like ripe crab-apples falling from the trees, when shaking them for cider.'"Source: Garrick Mallery, "Picture-Writing of the American Indians," [U.S.] Bureau of Ethnology. All of them represent stars having four points, except The-Swan, who draws a globular object followed by a linear track.Fig. 1219. It rained stars. Cloud-Shield’s Winter Count, 1833-‘34. (Original edition 1855.)"I witnessed this gorgeous spectacle, and was awe-struck. The air seemed filled with bright descending messengers from the sky. It was about daybreak when I saw this sublime scene. I was not without the suggestion, at the moment, that it might be the harbinger of the coming of the Son of Man; and in my then state of mind I was prepared to hail Him as my friend and deliverer. I had read that the 'stars shall fall from heaven,' and they were now falling."If we closely examine the data presented, we have a few 'holes' in the data represented by the 'ellipses' above. I am always leery whenever I see an ellipsis or ellipses and an immediate red flag goes up for me. More often than not I have seen an ellipsis(ses) misused. Further, references unto the moon turning to blood are poorly documented and sketchy at best.My apologies for the length, however in order to seriously consider the above, as much data as possible needs to be examined.
