The River of Living Water - Part 3 - 4 Revelation Unfolds (Jesus And The Holy Spirit)
1. Jesus at the Feast of Tabernacles
John 7:37-39 (NKJV)“On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying,
‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.
He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’
But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive;
for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”
Jesus identified Himself as the real source of living water at the precise moment the priest poured water on the altar.
He fulfilled the ceremony; the river now flowed not from the temple, but from Him.
2. The Fountain of Life
John 4:13–14 (NKJV)“Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
The living water Jesus gives is the Holy Spirit, a continual inner flow of divine life. It is not static; it springs up, bringing renewal to the believer and life to others.
3. The River Flows Through Believers
1 Corinthians 12:7-8 (NKJV)“But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:
for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit…”
1 Corinthians 14:3 (NKJV)
“But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.”
When the river flows through us, it manifests as healing, prophecy, encouragement, revelation, and wisdom.
This is the river that flows outwardly and continually, bringing life to believers and executing divine power to change the lives of others.
4. When the Flow is Hindered
The flow of the Spirit can be quenched or grieved.1 Thessalonians 5:19 (NKJV)
“Do not quench the Spirit.”
Ephesians 4:30 (NKJV)
“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”
The river can be held back through unbelief (Hebrews 3:19), cutting off faith’s channel. Through disobedience (Isaiah 59:2), sin can dam the flow or through pride or unforgiveness (James 4:6; Mark 11:25) clogging the heart where the Spirit dwells.
When we humble ourselves, repent, and yield again to God, the river flows freely once more.
The River of Living Water - Part 4: Flowing Unto Eternal Life
1. Joel’s Prophecy -The Promise of the Outpouring
Joel 2:23, 28–29 (NKJV)
“Be glad then, you children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord your God;
For He has given you the former rain faithfully,
And He will cause the rain to come down for you—
The former rain, and the latter rain…
And it shall come to pass afterward
That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
Your old men shall dream dreams,
Your young men shall see visions.”
The “former rain” points to God’s initial works (the law, the prophets, and Christ’s ministry).
The “latter rain” points to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the last days beginning at Pentecost and continuing until Christ’s return.
Just as Ezekiel saw the river flowing deeper and deeper (Ezekiel 47), Joel prophesied the increasing flow of the Spirit upon all flesh. a universal outpouring of divine life.
Joel foresaw a rain of the Spirit, the same living water Jesus promised.
The rain and the river are one: the Spirit of God poured out to revive and empower.
Centuries later, on the Day of Pentecost, this prophecy would find its fulfillment when the river burst forth in power and glory.
2. The Outpouring - The River Released
Acts 2:1–4 (NKJV)“When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
At Pentecost, the prophecy was fulfilled; the river burst forth from the hearts of believers.
The same Spirit that hovered over the waters in Genesis now filled the church with life, power, and revelation.
3. The River of Healing and Revelation
Acts 3:6–8 (NKJV)“Then Peter said, ‘Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.’
And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.
So he, leaping up, stood and walked and entered the temple with them walking, leaping, and praising God.”
The same river that flowed through Christ now flows through his followers, bringing healing, joy, and life. This river still flows through prophecy, revelation, encouragement, and the gifts of the Spirit.
4. The River in Revelation - Life Eternal
Revelation 22:1-2, 17 (NKJV)“And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life… and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
And the Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!’ And let him who hears say, ‘Come!’ And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.”
Here the river reaches its final course. Flowing from the throne of God and the Lamb, bringing eternal healing and joy.
The river of life begun in Eden flows now forever in the city of God. It is the unending presence of the Spirit, the very life of God shared with His redeemed people.
5. The Eternal Invitation
From Genesis to Revelation, the invitation never changes:“Come… whoever thirsts, let him take the water of life freely.”
The river that began in the Garden now fills all creation and still flows through all believers today, carrying the life of God to a dry and thirsty world.
