That's my suspicion also. With the invasion it puts to the test what Putin is really after. Is it to dispel NATO weapons in his "front yard" or is it something else?

Russia did not want Ukraine to join Nato, and be bordered by Nato country, so the talk about that forced them to take it over now.
Otherwise could have been a much larger war.
US could not stomach Cuba with Russian missiles so near it's border, would go to war over that too and almost did.

This is shocking what's going on, many innocent people are dying in Ukraine, if no one steps in to help defend Ukraine, Russia will most likely take over and many more lives will be lost.
