I believe it's similar to something called the Harvest Festival on your side of the pond. In a nutshell, Thanksgiving is a day in which to say thanks - particularly to God for where you are that came from the celebration of the end of the harvesting season. It generally involves eating a turkey - yes and that's just one of those traditional things that has arisen. I must say that this is one of my favorite holidays because there's no gifts given out and it just involves food and family.

Did I tell you all that my geneology shows me as a descendant of Massasoit, the Wampanoag leader at the first Thanksgiving?
