What happened when Adam failed God in disobedience - Adam took on a seed, Genesis 3:25. What I would like to point out is; in that seed comes the misuse of the human being that was created in "the image and likeness of God." What happened in spirit to Adam is what still grips humanity today.
Why is it God never imputed sin until the law came - because man was not the original sinner - Adam (Adam and now all humanity through Adam) partook of that sin but was not the original rebellious one sinner (Lucifer is the original sinner). God did not hold humanity responsible for sin because they did not cause sin - Satan caused sin - not mankind. The human being didn't even know what sin was until the law came and it put responsible on humanity. Not that they caused sin but because they had to be responsible now for that sin because they were partaking of it - and the law came to point out to humanity they will ultimately need savior for salvation - to redeem them back from a Satan seed to the original intention of God (seed) to birth (put his seed - Christ - in them by a literal birth). Humanity "in Christ," Ephesians 1:4. That is the original plan and purpose of creation - to be 'in Christ'.
So we were not responsible for the original sin - Satan is the original sinner not Adam so sin is never imputed until the law came.
12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. - Romans 5:12-13 .
Most powerful verses of scripture to finally see how humanity came to exsist in their situation - humanity had been sold under sin and that sin came from the original sinner Satan. How did sin get to humanity "by one man," that man Adam. Sin came through Adam into the human race by Satan, and trouble has occurred since.
Sin was in the world by one man, Adam - so it is by one man (Jesus Christ) did the free gift come by grace.
14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.
15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.
16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.
17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: - Romans 5:14-20.
