16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.
17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.
18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not. - 1 John 5:16-18.

There is a sin unto death (death nature) that came through Adam, and there is a sin not unto death. This is where we get the term 'death life'. It is a person who has never been born again and they will retain the sin nature.

The sin not unto death is; a born again christian who sins. They are sinning or committed sin and the need to confess and be forgiven.

This is where we get the term; sinners need to believe - and believers need to confess. Most of us came to be Christian's by going to an Altar and confessing our sin. That is how I came to the Lord. But scripturally it says we are to believe as a sinner. Confession is for believers - that is neither here nor there really because it is the heart that the Lord is looking at not what I say or don't say.

So since we have been on opinion today there you have it - my opinion means nothing. It may mean something to me but the Lord is looking at the heart to believe. Even believers need to believe - they need to believe what is written in the scriptures. I know Christian's that dought scripture and I get that but what it says is; to believe. If you want to be a believer you must believe - seems simple enough.

Some people jump to the conclusion that John is talking about born again Christians committing certain sins that lead them to spiritual death, but that does not seem to fit the context - 1 John 5:16 If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. There is sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray about that. 17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death. 18 We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.

AMPC - We know [absolutely] that anyone born of God does not [deliberately and knowingly] practice committing sin, but the One Who was begotten of God carefully watches over and protects him [Christ’s divine presence within him preserves him against the evil], and the wicked one does not lay hold (get a grip) on him or touch [him].

Apart from the blood of Christ, ALL sin leads to spiritual death. (Romans 3:23; 6:23)

Yes reading these verses give a clear cut answer to both - sin unto death and sin not unto death. The experiences we have with some that don't understand that is; humanity has death as their life and even though born again we can still hold to the death - downward pull of the knowledge of good and evil. Ever wonder why the enquire was so popular (crude analogy) because people favor death over life. It is a natural reaction to see the worse over the best. A good scripture for that is - let the dead bury the dead - because it explains what is in man.

Our schoolmaster, the Old Testament teaches us the difference.

Numbers 15:22-36

Verses: 22-29 Sin not unto death (sacrifice covered them)
Verses: 30-36 Sin unto death (NO sacrifice would cover them - they were put to death)

Yes the Old Testament didn't mess around but you can really a good perspective of how important the cross is and what God is doing today.

1 John 5:16-17 is talking about a brother committing a sin unto death. That is after being born again. Though the last verse of the epistle of James seems to differ with John on this.

Jesus paid for all the sins we committed prior to confessing our sin and being cleansed of all unrighteousness. That is a change of nature - being born again. Just as Acts 2:38 is how to become a Christian, so is 1 John 1:9. It does not mean we are not free from sin, so must confess everyday the sins we keep committing.
