Matthew 18:15-20, verse 19, this sentence has often been treated like a blank check, if two Christians agree about anything, then God is required to do it, the promotion, the relationship, the breakthrough, the outcome, the plan, scripture absolutely teaches the beauty and power of corporate prayer. Believers pray together throughout the New Testament, the church is commanded to ask, seek, knock, intercede and believe, but Matthew 18:19, Jesus is still speaking inside the same process. “The anything” is not floating in empty air, it is tied to the serious matter before them, truth, repentance, restoration, discipline, obedience and alignment with the Father’s will. That is agreement in context, not two wills pressuring God, two or three people coming into alignment before God.

Matthew 18:20, by now, the words have changed shape, you can hear the witnesses, you can hear the agreement in prayer, you can hear the private confrontation that came first, you can hear the church trying to obey heaven, instead of protect itself and the phrase that carries the most weight is not only two or three, it is “in my name.” In scripture, a name is not merely a label, it carries authority, character, reputation and representation. To gather in Jesus’ name is not simply to attach the phrase “in Jesus’ name” to a prayer, a meeting or a decision, it means gathering under his authority, in submission to his teaching, in alignment with is character, as people who know they are representing him.

A room can be full of religious language and still be governed by pride, a meeting can open in prayer and still be driven by fear. A group can quote scripture and still protect its reputation more than the wounded. A leader can speak about authority while avoiding accountability, a believer can say we are doing this for the Lord while using the Lord’s name to cover anger, that is why “in my name” should make the church slower, not louder. The name of Jesus is not decoration for your decisions, it is the authority that tests them. Matthew 18:20 is not mainly calling you to chase a feeling, it is calling you to submit to the Lord who is present and if he is present, the situation is not ordinary.

The anything has to be contrasted to and conformed to...His will.

It is interesting that the binding and loosing principle is given right before the two agree idea.

In both v. 18 and v. 19, earth and heaven are the scenes of the transactions.

What happens on earth has a correspondence to what happens in heaven, where our Father oversees and empowers the events.

Matthew 18

18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.

20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
