I recently had occasion to speak with a licensed psychiatrist through my work on the Kentucky Citizen Foster Care Review Board. Several psychiatric test methods were briefly discussed, one of them being the Meyers-Briggs Personality Test. I learned about this test in a biblical counseling course I was required to take in college. While searching for information on the test to refresh my memory, I came across sources in my reading which also discussed the Enneagram Personality Test - which is popular in many settings, including business, industry and even some Christian circles. What is its origin?

The woman interviewed in the video (Doreen Virtue) mentioned the Meyers-Briggs Personality Test in connection with the Enneagram Personality Test.

Ms. Virtue mentioned in the video that there is a a clip of Claudio Naranjo admitting that he invented a story about ancient sources and confessed that he received the Enneatypes via automatic writing. I’m not certain but I think this is the clip that she was alluding to.

Automatic writing is an occult practice; a form of channeling. Mr. Naranjo was communicating with, and receiving his insight from, the spirit world. The Enneatypes are the teachings of demons.

In my work with the KCFCRB, I will be voicing opposition to children in foster care and / or their family members being asked to take these tests. I have no power to prohibit it but I have a voice to speak against it.

“… so that came from my own observations, but mostly from automatic writing.” - Claudio Naranjo

“Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith. They will follow deceptive deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons.”

(1 Timothy 4:1, NLT)

“automatic writing, in spiritualism, writing produced involuntarily when the subject‘s attention is ostensibly directed elsewhere. The phenomenon may occur when the subject is in an alert waking state or in a hypnotic trance, usually during a seance. What is produced may be unrelated words, fragments of poetry, epithets, puns, obscenities, or well-organized fantasies. During the late 19th century, at the height of popular interest in the phenomenon, inspiration for automatic writing was generally attributed to external or supernatural forces. Since the advent, around 1900, of theories of personality, that postulate unconscious as well as conscious motivation, the inspiration of automatic writing has been assumed to be completely internal.

Modern psychodynamic theories of personality traits, attitudes, motives, impulses, and memories that are incompatible with the person’s conscious awareness may be dissociated from awareness and rarely expressed overtly in the course of normal waking behaviour. These elements may be revealed, however, in the content of automatic writing.”

Modern-day psychiatry dismisses the supernatural.

P.S.

Just as an aside, this dismissal is picked up on and made a major theme in Steve Deace’s book and movie of the same title, Nefarious.

Claudio Nenjamin Naranjo Cohen … was a Chilean psychiatrist who is considered a pioneer in integrating psychotherapy and the spiritual traditions. …”

While modern-day psychiatry by and large rejects the supernatural, Dr. Naranjo blended psychotherapy with the supernatural.

“After being used for several decades in Catholic retreats and seminars, the nine-type personality tool has seen an explosion of popularity in evangelical circles. …

… the Enneagram presents an approach to spirituality that is alien to, and often at odds with, the language and contours of scripture. …”

The reader should examine this claim for himself or herself to determine if it is so or not.
