When “we truly believe in” God’s Word and what Jesus Christ did for us, by going to the cross to die for our past sins, and to also make us free from the power of future sin and death. Then we, by the grace of God are born again; and we receive the Righteousness “of” God, which is by the faith “of” Jesus Christ.

Notice this “gift” of imputed righteousness is by the faith “of”Christ, and is not given to us because of our own works, but by the works “of” Jesus Christ.

Galatians 2:16
Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith “of”Jesus Christ, even we have believed “in” Jesus Christ, that we might be justified bythe faith “of” Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

Again notice the imputed righteousness “OF” God is given because of the faith “OF” Jesus Christ, when “we believe in” what Jesus did for us.

Romans 3:22 Even the righteousness “of”God which is by faith “of” Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that “believe”:for there is no difference:

We being born again of the Spirit now live, because of the faith “of” the Son of God.

Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith “of” the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Notice, it is not “our own righteousness”that saves us, but the righteousness “of”God, through the faith “of” Jesus Christ.

Philippians 3:9 And be found in him, not having “mine own righteousness”, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith “of” Christ, the righteousness which is “of” God by faith:

This faith “of” Christ is “the gift of faith”we receive by the grace of God. (not of ourselves)

Ephesians 2:8 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that “not of yourselves”: it is “the gift of God:”

God foretold of how his servants would have “His righteousness” imputed to them.

Isaiah 54:17
No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and “their righteousness is of me”, saith the Lord.

We receive this righteousness “of” God by the faith “of “Jesus Christ, when “we believe in” Him.

2 Peter 1:1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through “the righteousness of God” and our Saviour Jesus Christ:

Galatians 3:22
But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith “of” Jesus Christ might be “given to them” that believe. (gift of faith)

So in order to receive this gift, we must believe in (by faith in) the words of God concerning His Son, and in the power of the cross, in the cleansing power of the blood of Christ; and in the power of God’s resurrection through Jesus Christ our Lord.

For this is “the work of God”, that you “believe” on Him whom He has sent.

Galatians 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by “faith in” Christ Jesus.

So “believe” the words of Jesus Christ, and seek God’s righteousness by “faith in” Jesus Christ.

Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and “his righteousness”; and all these things shall be added unto you.

2 Corinthians 5:21 “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might “be made” the righteousness of God “in him.”

This gift of grace and of the righteousness of God, and of the faith “of” Christ cannot be “earned by your own works”, it is a gift given to those who truly believe.

Romans 3:21
But now the righteousness of God “without the law” is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

Romans 3:22
Even the righteousness of God which is by faith “of” Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them “that believe”: for there is no difference:

Romans 4:6 “Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness “without works”,

Romans 10:3 “For they being ignorant of “God's righteousness”, and going about to establish “their own righteousness”, have not submitted themselves unto “the righteousness of God”.

Galatians 2:21 “I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.”

James 2:23 “And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham “believed God”, and it was “imputed unto him for righteousness”: and he was called the Friend of God.

We cannot save ourselves or work off our own sin debt, neither can we make ourselves righteous.

Romans 4:2-5 2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.3 For what saith the scripture? “Abraham believed God”, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.5 But to him that worketh not, but “believeth on him” that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.”

So believe in the power of the Lord that can make you righteous

Genesis 15:6 “And he “believed in” the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.”

Romans 3:26 To declare, I say, at this time“his righteousness”: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which “believeth in” Jesus.”

Romans 4:5 “But to him that worketh not, but “believeth on him” that justifieth the ungodly, “his faith” is counted for righteousness.

Romans 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law “for righteousness” to every one that “believeth”.

Romans 10:9-10 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt “believe in thine heart” that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt besaved. 10 For with the heart man “believeth unto righteousness”; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

So believe “in” the Word of God, and receive the imputed righteousness of God, being justified by the faith “of” Jesus Christ.

May the grace of the Lord be with you. Peace

Nobody can deny anything you said, and the scripture you cited does confirm that people are saved by Christ's faith and His work on the cross. Salvation is of the Lord.

You say "believe" and that's what we must do to be saved. The problem is, that none seek after God. All have gone astray, all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. We re all born with a nature that is bent towards sin, so we are slaves to sin, and we are enemies of God.

Jesus said "you must be born again" Nicodemus, replied and said that's impossible and Jesus agreed with him that it is impossible for man. But all things are possible with God. I believe it's impossible, for an unconverted unregenerate person to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as their Lord and savior.

There are other places in the bible which describe mankind as being born dead in trespasses and sin. That obviously means spiritually dead. Other verses say that the natural man cannot receive spiritual things as they are foolishness to him.

So to say "we must believe to be saved" is true, but I would also say that before one can believe God needs to open their spiritual eyes. Otherwise they will never believe as the gospel will remain foolishness to them.
All of that is to say that salvation is of the Lord, that means He instigates it and He makes us able to endure the race and He finishes the work of salvation, so we are as passengers and God is the driver.

Building your entire theology on a Greek preposition seems like a bad idea.

Greek prepositions are notoriously vague and overloaded in meaning.

I agree. It is written faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. It is God who gives us the ears to hear His words.

Proverbs 20:12
The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them.

Saving faith is given to a person. Otherwise as unsaved we would never have the faith that is required to be saved.

As is written, Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.
