7. The Gift And The Office

Prophet vs. Prophecy

Prophet (Office):
A person called and recognized to consistently declare God’s word with authority. Ephesians 4:11; Acts 21:10–11. Functions in guiding, warning, and strengthening the church.

Prophecy (Gift):
A Spirit-given message for edification, exhortation, or comfort. 1 Corinthians 12:10; 1 Corinthians 14:3.
Any believer may prophesy as the Spirit gives utterance.

All gifted believers may prophesy (gift), but not all are prophets (office). A prophet can also manifest other gifts as the Spirit directs.

Teacher vs. Word of Knowledge/Wisdom

Teacher (Office):
Called to instruct and ground the church in sound doctrine. Ephesians 4:11; James 3:1.

Word of Knowledge (Gift):
Supernatural knowledge of facts beyond natural understanding. 1 Corinthians 12:8.

Word of Wisdom (Gift):

God-given insight into how to apply truth to a situation. 1 Corinthians 12:8.

Any believer may receive a word of knowledge or wisdom (gift), but not all are called to the teaching office. A teacher may also manifest other gifts depending on each situation.

Evangelist vs. Tongues/Interpretation

Evangelist (Office):
A ministry role proclaiming the gospel to the lost. Ephesians 4:11; example: Philip the evangelist Acts 21:8

Tongues/Interpretation (Gift):

Spirit-inspired languages and their interpretation. 1 Corinthians 12:10; 14:27–28.
Can serve as a sign to unbelievers 1 Corinthians 14:22; Acts 2:6–8.

Any believer may pray in tongues as the Spirit enables, but evangelism as an office is a calling. An evangelist can also operate in a variety of other gifts as the lord leads.

Pastor (Shepherd) vs. Gifts of Healing

Pastor (Office):
Shepherds God’s flock, guiding, protecting, and nurturing them. Ephesians 4:11; 1 Peter 5:2.

Gifts of Healing (Gift):
Spirit-empowered acts of restoration. 1 Corinthians 12:9.

Believers may lay hands on the sick in Jesus’ name (Mark 16:18), but not all are called to the pastoral office. A Pastor may also be operating in other gifts as the Holy Spirit wills.

Apostle vs. General Gifts

Apostle (Office):
Sent ones, foundation layers of the church, pioneering new works. Ephesians 4:11; 1 Corinthians 9:1–2.

General Gifts:

All believers may walk in spiritual gifts, but apostles carry authority and responsibility for establishing and building up the body of Christ wherever they are sent.

Believers may be sent on missions, but apostleship is a unique office.

9. Conclusion

The Gifts of the Spirit are for all believers, given by the Holy Spirit as He wills. Offices are specific callings given by Christ to equip the body of Christ (church).
Every Christian should desire and walk in spiritual gifts (1 Cor. 14:1), while honoring the offices Christ has placed in His body. (Church)

“There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.”
1 Corinthians 12:4–5
