Who were the Spartans?
Part of the tribes of Israel.

the book of Maccabees was found in every version of scripture discovered in the Quamran caves known as the Dead Sea scrolls.
Fact: the book of Esther was not found among the scrolls.

If all the scriptures were used today everyone would know for sure that the ancient Spartans were Hebrews who left Moses in the wilderness days and started fresh as Spartans.
Mostly of the tribe of Simeon according to the two census that were taken during the wilderness experience..
The tribes were not allowed to go into the promised land but their was no law that said that couldn't strike our on their own.
It's possible a feud was brewing and the tribe of Simeon had a reason to be angry. When a leader of Simeon was executed by a Levitte priest.
the Simeon tribe was quick to anger and always ready to fight. Maybe they left the wilderness rather than fight amongst their kinsmen

Their was a plague in between the two census which killed about 24,000 people.
They were at least 56,000 more men of fighting age missing in the 2nd census and mostly from the tribe of Simeon.

Lacedemonians is one of the three names used for the Spartans. The Spartans had colonized part of Italy and Sicily.
A river that flows to Rome is called Taranto today after the common Semitic name Tara. The land was once called Tara.

1Ma 12:5 And this is the copy of the letters which Jonathan wrote to the Lacedemonians:
1Ma 12:6 Jonathan the high priest, and the elders of the nation, and the priests, and the other of the Jews*, unto the Lacedemonians their brethren send greeting:

The original language isn't written in the concordance so I can't tell if JEW is used or Judaean.
it's believed that the word Jew wasn't used til in the 1800's

1Ma 12:21 It is found in writing, that the Lacedemonians and Jews are brethren, and that they are of the stock of Abraham:

There are some people in this world that wouldn't want this to be known. Mainly the devil himself.

1Ma 14:20 And this is the copy of the letters that the Lacedemonians sent; The rulers of the Lacedemonians, with the city, unto Simon the high priest, and the elders, and priests, and residue of the people of the Jews, our brethren, send greeting:

Tara Italy and Syracuse Sicily were colonized by Spartans.
There is a river named Tara in Sparta and Italy. Italians call it Taranto now.

When Athens went to war with Sparta, Corinth was allied with Sparta and Syracuse.
the rest of Sicily was allied with Athens.

Paul makes the connection with Corinthians being of old Hebrew stock who's Fathers were with Moses in the desert.
Athenians were of Jovan of Japeth according to the bible while Corinthians and Spartans were of Hebrew stock.
Corinth and Sparta were relatives and allies.

1Co 10:1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;
1Co 10:2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

Lycugus a famous leader of Sparta was called the Law Giver, like Mose.
It is said they honored the Seventh day.
He led the Spartans to victory against Athens.

Honored in the White house

The images of the famous leader appeared White like a typical Celtic man.

This book of Maccabees is omitted by most protestants today.
Who influenced the decision?

Again almost every bible version found in the dead Sea scrolls has the books of Maccabees.

The Apocrypha books were included in the 1st edition 1611 KJV Bible.

I've always meant to research how later KJV Bibles started leaving it out, and also the two letters the translators wrote, but never got to it. Maybe someone else can supply that info, with documentation?

A good sites with some useful info about the lost books.

For 275 years there were efforts to purge these the Apocrypha from the Bible:
· "APOCRYPHA, that is, Books which are not to be esteemed like the Holy Scriptures, and yet which are useful and good to read." (Luther Bible, 1534)
· "The books and treatises which among the Fathers of old are not reckoned to be of like authority with the other books of the Bible, neither are they found in the Canon of Hebrew." (Coverdale Bible 1535)
· "The books that follow in order after the Prophets unto the New Testament, are called Apocrypha, that is, books which were not received by a common consent to be read and expounded publicly in the Church, neither yet served to prove any point of Christian religion save in so much as they had the consent of the other scriptures called canonical to confirm the same, or rather whereon they were grounded: but as books proceeding from godly men they were received to be read for the advancement and furtherance of the knowledge of history and for the instruction of godly manners: which books declare that at all times God had an especial care of His Church, and left them not utterly destitute of teachers and means to confirm them in the hope of the promised Messiah, and also witness that those calamities that God sent to his Church were according to his providence, who had both so threatened by his prophets, and so brought it to pass, for the destruction of their enemies and for the trial of his children." (Geneva Bible, 1560, Preface)
· The Synod of the Reformed Church held at Dordrecht in 1618 condemned the Apocrypha.
· "The books commonly called Apocrypha, not being of divine inspiration, are no part of the Canon of Scripture; and therefore are of no authority in the Church of God, nor to be any otherwise approved, or made use of, than other human writings." (Westminster Confession, 1647)
· The thirty nine Articles of the Church of England in 1562 recognized this and rejected the canonicity of these apocryphal writings which the Roman church had proclaimed.
· In 1880 the American Bible Society voted remove the "Apocrypha" Books from the King James Version. These 14 Books [There are 155,683 words in over 5,700 verses in 168 Chapters] of the Apocrypha had been part of the King’s bible since 1611.
· The "Apocrypha" was officially removed from the English printings of the KJV by the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1885 leaving only 66 books.

One site says that none of the books were written in Hebrew but mostly in Greek.
but I can't believe that Maccabee would be Greek only if it was among the dead sea scrolls.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1_Maccabees

Wiki claims that Maccabee 1 was in Hebrew but later only found in Greek.
And they have no idea who wrote Maccabee 2.

Why were some of these found in the Quamran caves?
It appear the books found were written in Greek oddly enough.

Didn't realize their removal started as early as 1629 in England.

I agree, the Apocrypha is not canonical. But I do regard some of the points of history in them. I see some of them as possibly Gnostic in origin. So I wouldn't advise their reading to a new babe in Christ Jesus, but only for those who have their senses exercised towards discernment. Same goes for some of the Essene sect writings found among the Dead Sea Scrolls.

So 300 was based on a true story ?
there is some truth to it
They had to be tough to face the diverse groups of peoples around them.
They faced the Greek Athenians of Japeth. Then the Persians of old Elam their distant cousins.

They also tried to hold the Danaans(tribe of Dan) of Macedonian in check early on.
Alexander the Great was a Danaan.

The following verses from the historian Josephus indicate that the certain sects of the Greeks were of the lineage of Abraham:

He enjoined the same ambassadors, that, as they came back, they should go to the Spartans, and put them in mind of their friendship and kindred...

The senate then confirmed what had been formerly decreed concerning their friendship with the Jews, and gave them letters to carry to all the kings of Asia and Europe, and to the governors of the cities, that they might safely conduct them to their own country. Accordingly, as they returned, they came to Sparta, and delivered the epistle which they had received of Jonathan to them; a copy of which here follows: "Jonathan the high priest of the Jewish nation, and the senate, and body of the people of the Jews, to the ephori, and senate, and people of the Lacedemonians, send greeting. If you be well, and both your public and private affairs be agreeable to your mind, it is according to our wishes. We are well also. When in former times an epistle was brought to Onias, who was then our high priest, from Areus, who at that time was your king, by Demoteles, concerning the kindred that was between us and you, a copy of which is here subjoined, we both joyfully received the epistle, and were well pleased with emoteles and Areus, although we did not need such a demonstration, because we were satisfied about it from the sacred writings (10) yet did not we think fit first to begin the claim of this relation to you, lest we should seem too early in taking to ourselves the glory which is now given us by you. It is a long time since this relation of ours to you hath been renewed; and when we, upon holy and festival days, offer sacrifices to God, we pray to him for your preservation and victory. As to ourselves, although we have had many wars that have compassed us around, by reason of the covetousness of our neighbors, yet did not we determine to be troublesome either to you, or to others that were related to us; but since we have now overcome our enemies, and have occasion to send Numenius the son of Antiochus, and Antipater the son of Jason, who are both honorable men belonging to our senate, to the Romans, we gave them this epistle to you also, that they might renew that friendship which is between us. You will therefore do well yourselves to write to us, and send us an account of what you stand in need of from us, since we are in all things disposed to act according to your desires." So the Lacedemonians received the ambassadors kindly, and made a decree for friendship and mutual assistance, and sent it to them.
