Our "works" are the fruit which we produce as we walk hand in hand with Christ. It is by our produced fruits that we will be deemed righteous or not. It is not always as clear cut as you are making out. Whether or fruit/works are acceptable only depends on our hearts condition when we engage in doing them. The Goats were deemed unrighteous because they only did the required works if there was an outcome acceptable to them, whereas the Sheep were not focused on the final outcome but only in blessing the people they blessed in their Kingdom work.
Christians don't have a righteousness that God will accept. We are saved and justified by the doing and the dying of Jesus.

Believing is what makes the Gospel ours, but that is not what saves us. What saves us is the doing and the dying of Jesus.
The dying of Jesus on the cross, is the basis upon which we are redeemed from suffering the penalty for our sins. Jesus' sacrifice is the basis upon which God can save us. God's holiness demands that the penalty for sin, all sin, be paid. God's grace has provided the perfect sacrifice to cover our penalty.

Believing is a condition whereby God can count Jesus' sacrifice sufficient to cover our penalty for sin. Believing, faith, was counted to Abraham as righteousness.... the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith (Rom 4:3,13)

The dying didn't save us. If that were the case, then all would be saved. We are saved through faith. We are saved, not by believing, but through believing.

Christians have the righteousness imputed to them because they have believed. Abraham believed in Gold and it was counted to him as righteousness (Rom 4:3). In the same way Christians believe in God and it is counted to them as righteousness (Rom 4:5).

Righteousness is to the Christians account. He doesn't have it yet. It is reserved for him in heaven, 1 Peter 1:4.

The law says, "The soul that sins must die" Jesus died in our place and for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:2.
