I would imagine that Joseph was in his thirties when he was espoused to Mary.
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. - Matthew 1
In the early life of Jesus we find Jesus in the temple as he and his family, with Joseph, had a family tradition of going to the feast of the passover...
41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.
42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.
43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.
48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.
49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?
50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.
51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. - Luke 2
It seems that Joseph passed away sometimes before the time of Jesus ministry. For when they were at the marriage in Cana at Galilee we find no references to Joseph. The last reference of Joseph was when Jesus was twelve.
1 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: -
2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.
3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.
4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. - John 2:1
Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him. - Mark 6:3
47 Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee.
48 But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren?
49 And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! - Matthew 12
It appears that Joseph passed away sometimes when Jesus was in his late teens. As Jesus had brothers and sisters, who were younger than he, they went for a time supporting the family without an earthly father.
