This is the third session in my study/discussion series on the armor of God.
The other two can be found here:
The Helmet of Salvation
The Shield of Faith

Eph 6:17...the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He overcame satan each time by saying "It is written" We see that each time satan attempted to sow seeds of doubt the Lord countered with scripture

Mt 4:3-4 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Mt 4:6-7 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

Mt 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

He used the scriptures when engaging the Pharisees:

Mt 21:13 And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.

Mk 7:6-7 He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

He also corrects the church with the sword of his mouth:

Rv 2:16 Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.

When He returns He will fight against the whole world with the sword of His mouth:

Rv 19:15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

The importance of the scriptures is paramount. It is an essential foundation for our faith. We need to read them for life and faith. Reject any teaching that attempts to cast doubt on the Bible as the word of God. Memorize and use the word to cast down imaginations and bring every thought into the obediance of Christ.

The sword of the Spirit is the word of God used by the prompting of the Spirit. God is holy and His word is holy. A person must be set aside and be consecrated to God for that kind of warfare...of the spiritual kind.

Therefore thus saith the Lord, If thou return (repent), then will I bring thee again, and thou shalt stand before me: and if thou take forth the precious from the vile, thou shalt be as my mouth: let them return unto thee; but return not thou unto them. Jer. 15:19
