i think people misinterpret exodus' account of moses receieving the commandments of god on mt. sinai
exodus 34:5-28 tells of much more
Exodus
34:28

So he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread
nor drank water. And He wrote on the tablets
the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.

he wrote on the front and back of both tablets for 40 days and nights and wrote only 10 commandments?

Chiseling stone is not the same as writing. Every jot and tittle had to be painstakingly reproduced as God had done before Moses broke them. Traditionally the Jews say that the tablet were cut right through by the letters

Reminds me of the Mel Brooks skit where Moses was coming down the hill with three tablets.

He said, "My people, rejoice! for God has given us these fifteen...." Then he accidentally dropped one tablet and it shattered into pieces. And without missing a beat said, "......ten, these TEN Commandments....."

exodus 32: 15 ¶And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two atables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written.

In Ex 34:1 God tells Moses that He will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets. God then shows Moses his glory and Moses intercedes for the people with fasting and prayer for 40 days. God then reviews some of the covenant with Israel concerning only one God, the sabbath, feasts, redemption of firstborn, sacrifices, and tells Moses to write it down. Verse 28 states he wrote on the tablets the 10 commandments. Could the "he" refer to God who in verse 1 promised to write the commandments again and what Moses wrote was a part of the covenant specific to Israel (verses 11-26)?

ok, then the question arises.....when the scripture tells of moses came down from the mount, "he only had the two tablets". what was written upon themduring his stay?

Exodus
34:28

So he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread
nor drank water. And He wrote on the tablets
the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.

exodus 32: 15 ¶And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two atables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written.
