Hebrews 10:26 (NASB)
For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a terrifying expectation of judgment and THE FURY OF A FIRE WHICH WILL CONSUME THE ADVERSARIES. Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As with all of Hebrews, it is addressed to mankind as a whole....So too are these verses addressed to both the unsaved and saved alike.... The unsaved as a warning to them, and than to the saved, as an encouragement to stay strong in their faith..
For the comparison is made between not obeying the Law of Moses, with not obeying the Gospel of Christ.
This is the choice set before all men.. Both in the OT where they could listen to the Law of Moses and be blessed by God, or they could live by their own standards and reap the fruit of their doings... Which is being compared with those under the New Covenant, which includes all men born after Christ’s resurrection...We likewise, are given a choice, whether to listen to the Gospel of Life or reap the consequences of everlasting destruction. This is the severity of the truths being put forth...
The warnings of;
“if we go on sinning after we receive the knowledge of the truth”
Is equated to those in the OT that heard the Law of Moses but chose to ignore the instructions.. So how is this? Because it was knowledge that they received, they heard the words of the Gospel, just as they heard the words of the Law, then rejected them...It is to those this warning is directed to.....
They are being warned against hearing the truths of the Gospel, than rejecting those truths as something unworthy and useless, something unclean to be trampled under foot, it is this that is being warned against.....For it is here the the unforgivable sin is committed... Which is the rejecting of the Gospel of Grace in the time of this life...For the Gospel of salvation is offered only to mankind in the time of this life....If it is not received here, there remains no more sacrifice for sins, for they would be sacrificing Christ afresh..For to trample under foot the blood of Christ, is to trample under foot that which sanctifies..
For as scripture says, “it is appointed unto man once to die and after that judgement”...
For at that time, it will be a very terrible thing to fall into the hands of a Living God...
So this warning, as are the warnings in Hebrews 6, written to those that as of yet, have not received the New Birth...For Hebrews is an encouragement to all of humanity to receive the new birth...
For as Christ Himself said;
“you must be born again”
This is the dividing line between the saved and unsaved, the new birth....
For those, who at the time of their departure into eternity, that do not possess the new birth, will find themselves recipients of all the warnings, cautions. curses, put forth in Hebrews..
Those who are in possession of the new birth, at the time of their departure, according to the growth of that new life, will their glory be...
So the encouragements in Hebrews go to those that possess the new birth, the curses go to those that would willingly choose to reject such a great and awesome gift...
Than we have this admonishment;
Hebrews 10:39 (NASB)
But we are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the preserving of the soul.
Meaning, we are not of those that have not chosen Christ, but we are of those that have chosen Christ to the preserving of the soul...
Once again, the contrast between those that have received the new birth and those that have shrunk back from receiving it...
Be blessed all that have received the new birth, which birth, sanctifies one wholly....
For all of Hebrews is a warning to those that have not received the new birth and an encouragement to those that have, to stay strong in the faith that they might get a full reward...
To those that are not of those, that have refused the Heavenly gift...
@Not me What a searching Epistle is Hebrews.....! here, against an Old Testament background, the superiority ("better", a keyword) to anything in the Old Testament of the Lord Jesus in all His glorious offices, titles, and finished work, with all the Old Testament Scriptures pointing forward to Him.....and the warnings also, as you so rightly describe.
