Gen 3;5: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

Knowledge right from wrong, good from evil is the base of all religious maturity and perfection as per:

Hebrews 5:14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil,

1Kings 3:9 So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong.

and
Isaiah 5:20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.

No one has ever rationally explained to me how knowing the difference between good and evil is bad.

Gen 3;5: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

We are to become like Jesus and emulate the Christ to fulfill HIS plan for us as per:
Colossians 3:8-17, Ephesians 4:11-24: (Esp: 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ.)

1 Peter 1:15-16, "But as he which hath called you is holy so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; because it is written, 'be ye holy; for I am holy'."

Romans 8: 29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.

2 Corinthians 3:18 And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate[a] the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

1 John 3:2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears,[a] we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

How does "ye shall be as gods" as a bad thing, reconcile with our becoming like Christ?

No one has ever rationally explained to me how becoming like GOD is bad.

Gen 3:5 [For] God 430 [doth] know 3045 [that in the] day 3117 ye eat 398 [thereof, then your] eyes 5869 [shall be] opened 6491 , [and ye shall be as] gods 430, knowing 3045 good 2896 and evil 7451.

Lets take out the words added to make the English flow...

Gen 3:5 God 430 knows 3045 day 3117 eat 398 eyes 5869 opened 6491, gods 430, knowing 3045 good 2896 evil 7451.

There certainly seems to be room here for an interpretation that does not contradict the verses previously mentioned...

First of all, we must see who is talking here. Satan.

His motive was to get Adam to obey him rather than God, so as to usurp the authority that God gave to Adam over the whole entire world.

For it is written, your Master is the one you obey.

Jesus said, why do call me Lord, but you don't do what I say.

Satan will surely mix some truth with what he is saying to get us to do the same.

God himself desired to teach Adam right from wrong through relationship. Satan wanted to disconnect Adam from relationship with God.

Secondly, What is right with man, may not be right with God. For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

Righteousness is the foundation of The Kingdom of God, for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Romans 14:17

Notice the phrase here "in the Holy Spirit", this means to me "in relationship" with God. In another words righteousness apart from God in not right.

What is right "in our eyes" and what is "right in God's eyes" could be two different things. That is the very epitome of lawlessness, "doing what is right in our own eyes".

For it is written - There is a way that seems right to a man, but the thereof is the way of death.

Example : 1 Samuel 15:2-3

2 Thus says the Lord of hosts: 'I will punish Amalek for what he did to Israel, how he ambushed him on the way when he came up from Egypt. 3 Now go and attack Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and do not spare them. But kill both man and woman, infant and nursing child, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.' "

If The Lord told us to do this today, the response would probably be something along the line of "Lord, don't you know that is not politically correct"

Saul was removed as king because he did not fully obey God.

Furthermore, take note what The Lord thinks of the situation - 23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry...

Samuel seemed to have a clearer grasp of righteousness that Saul, because Samuel has a closer relationship with The Lord than Saul.

The bottom line, we shall be conformed to His image by spending time in His presence, not by listening to the devil.

Thanks JLB,

so, if I got this right:

- the serpent told her the truth but to an evil end, to separate her from God by rebellion

- she had no discernment about his motives but accepted him as a helper to get her closer to the truths he was mentioning

- this implies that though she was to be Adam's helper, she knew she needed a helper herself...but why?

- it also implies that she was tricked and therefore did not make a free will decision to disoby GOD but rather thought she was going to get closer to HIM.

Peace, Ted

When we get to know good from evil we become morale beings. Before that, nothing was sinful. So when Adam and Eve ate the fruit of the tree, sin entered the world.

When Adam got to know Eve, which he knew he should not, he was hit by the feeling what he had done had consequences. He married Eve. He became a morale being. And Adam was no devil: he stayed with her.

Any idea that we are to become our own 'Christ' is a fallacy. That imitation of Christ idea actually originates from mystic forms of Christianity, which is very dangerous to one's soul. What we as Christ's servants are to do, is obey Him, obey His commandments He gave us. Then we become 'children of God', as "sons of God", and not literally 'gods'.

The temptation to Eve involved something she 'saw' with her eyes that created wantoness in the flesh. It was a temptation affecting her fleshy mind and body.

Gen 3:6
6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
(KJV)

Those are all fleshy pointers.

I Jn 2:16-17
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
(KJV)

The tree of the knowledge of good and evil is contrasted with God's Tree of Life in His Garden. So the arena is about what sustains Eternal Life, for at the end of Gen.3 we're shown how God setup cherubs to guard the 'way' to the Tree of Life, lest Adam and Eve were able to continue to eat of God's Tree and live forever.

At that time in God's Garden, the devil ("that old serpent") was established already as the adversary. That means he had already rebelled against God, and in his given role as temptor. Thus the concept of 'sin' had already begun with the devil, for as John said the devil sinneth from the beginning. Along with that event of Satan's rebelliion came the knowledge of good and evil, literally a system of knowledge that tries to supplant the righteousness of God so as to tempt away from a relationship with God (like JLB showed).

What forms has that kind of knowledge taken today? Ideaology of this world, and the 'age of reason' enlightenment type thinking, abject materialism, esotericism, idol worship, occultism. All those ways of this world seek to make an end around God and His Way. And with the occultists, they seek to do a literal end around God in trying to penetrate the Heavenly realm thinking to gain actual powers of that realm.

Like Simon the sorcerer in the Book of Acts, when he saw workings of The Holy Spirit through Christ's Apostles, he attempted to 'buy' The Holy Spirit.

So what the devil tempted Eve with in God's Garden involves a lot more than a simple piece of fruit off a tree. And that tempting is still in effect within this world we live in.

Yet what's funny, is that no matter how much someone tries to do their own salvation, seeking perfection to become their own god, they always fail. God placed even the whole creation in a state of bondage to corruption to make certain that cannot happen. But with all the cases of men that tried to become 'gods', even all the ancient Pharaohs of Egypt, the king of Babylon, etc., they'll all dead and buried, never reaching perfection. Their wise men experimented with powers from the spiritual realm, but it did them not one bit of good. One can read volumes upon volumes of mystic writings their sages left and the only path it led to was the grave.

So it's very important from which 'tree' we gain understanding and knowledge from. Satan's tree is one of corruption that can produce only corruption. But God's Tree is Eternal Life and Righteousness.
