I must insert my own comment here about my own mother. She was born in 1923 and remembered clearly her family's difficulties during what are called the Great Depression... and in Oklahoma the Dust Bowl. She only attended elementary school growing up in Oklahoma never having the opportunity to go to high school but in she went to the top in one respect as a young school girl. She the best of the best among spellers.
When the time came for it she was invited to Oklahoma City to compete in a state-wide spelling bee. She went but was a very embarrassed young lady because she did own any shoes at all. She went to the contest bare-footed and won the spelling bee.
