Regardless, win or no, it was the right thing to do for them.
President Donald Trump issued an executive order on May 20 that may have virtually assured his victory in the midterm elections later this year.
The executive order directs the government to reform and revise the systems used by hardworking Latin Americans to wire money to their families back home.
Currently tens of millions of Latin immigrants wire $93 million annually home to provide their families with the necessities of life. When informal cash remittances are counted, the total rises to over $200 million annually.
The companies they use to send home the money — like Western Union — typically charge fees of 8 or 9% for the service.
Trump's order will slash the fee for remittances and also attack the fraud often perpetrated on the low-income workers who are just trying to help share the fruits of their honest labor to help their families survive.
For a president who has often been attacked as anti-immigrant, the order is a massive political master stroke to really change and improve the lives of legal immigrants who play by the rules.
The interest rates or commissions Latin immigrants have to pay for these remittances currently runs to 8% or 9%, but competitor companies are eager to provide the same service for only half as much in commissions.
Effectively, with the stroke of a pen, Trump has granted a pay raise of at least 5% to 7% to to Latins sending money home.
In recent polls, Trump has neared the 50% threshold among Latinos, but with the new executive order, all bets are off and the way seems clear for him to get solid majorities of Latino votes, decisively affecting the 2026 legislative contests in California, Texas, Florida, New Mexico, Nevada and other states with large Hispanic populations.
