I studied somewhat for around 25 years the relationship between the conscious and subconscious mind and specifically how the two can interact with mental, emotional and physical hallucinations.
I was able to learn bits of pertinent information from doctors over the years who prescribed anti-psychotics for schizo effective disorder.
The relationship between sleep states and waking states, and various methods scientists have used to activate both together.
On the one side there are the techniques to induce "lucid dreaming". Which is becoming conscious during REM sleep. That is where a conscious state happens to send that person into their dream in the promise to be able to control their dream and the conditions and environment of it. Then that individual is not able to interact or sense the actual physical environment their body is asleep in.
Then on the other side are hallucinagens that can activate what I believe to be the subconscious mind during the normal conscious day. In that way the may experience mental, emotional and/or physical hallucinations, which include thought, visual, audible, sensual hallucinations.
Hallucinogenic compounds induce such effects. Psilocybin (magic mushrooms), LSD (acid), MDMA (Molly), 2C type triptamine drugs as well as Marijuana, peyote as well as others.
Those drugs may activivate, alter the serotonin areas of the brain, which I understand are responsible for portions of REM sleeping states.
While some of the tribal traditions of different cultures have involved the use of psychedelics for their religious ceremonies, modern day psychedelics are used as recreational and party drugs.
I would like to raise awareness and advise caution regarding such drugs. They can be dangerous and are not necessary to my understanding. They can be dangerous in various ways. From physically dangerous to mentally and emotionally dangerous.
One of my concerns is the psychoactive nature of such drugs as they can induce schizo-effective like states with effects that include paranoia, psychosis, psychotic behaviors. Which may include "hearing voices" as described in the article below.
