5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
7 For he that is dead is freed from sin. - Romans 6:5-7.

Through the years I have had people come to me looking for some kind of help to get the victory over some pull of the flesh. Not that I had all the answers but that is what I knew somewhat and was willing to help. What I began to realize was believers can struggle just like anyone else. Being a believer you understand the frailty of a believer anyway. What happened was I started seeing a believer could only get the victory by seeing their death in Christ. It didn't matter the situation the answer was they were dead to it already. I had been taught you needed to die to the flesh. What I was seeing was we were already dead to it and needed that knowledge fixed in us. Paul described it as a reckoning, you reckon yourself dead. What is a reckoning? Reckoning is; the mind realizes the truth or fact, you use truth for growing up and victory. You could/should label that revelation, you see yourself crucified with Christ on the cross by the Spirit, the Spirit teaches you your death.

So your compassion changes with time. The believer has available to them anytime they want it 'the mind that knows nothing but victory.

"Be of good cheer for I have overcome the world."

What is it that causes a believer to live defeated by some addiction or some other shortcoming? It's simple; they have not seen their death in Christ, they still live trying to get the victory, trying to do something, but never quite getting there, that is a miserable life.

What are you saying "I'm supposed to look at something (the cross) and get victory," that cannot happen I need some kind of help. That may be for some but the cross is a place of pain sometimes, if you ever get the victory it will be because of the cross and you acknowledging it as your death, dead as Jesus was when he hung there. Do you think that pain and suffering was for not, when you go to the cross there will still be pain and suffering because of your flesh. But it will be the only place you can ever get help and the victory every believer so desires.

What do you mean by that? Have you ever watched someone that has an addition, a pull so strong their body shakes. They may need some special care but ultimately they will have to go to where it all started and face the pain and suffering of getting free. There is no free rides, to have life in God there must be death. Bless you.

@soul man What a great reminder of the Lord Jesus' victory in John 16.33, as quoted!

Another one is in 1 Corinthians 15.57, with its heartening outcome for our lives in verse 58:

"But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord."
