The problem with the KJV is that the English language has changed. Some words no longer mean what they used to mean.
And I've had the experience that some don't even understand a whole verse...
let alone a word.

I feel that the KJV has to be "translated" first...
and then understood.

Manuscripts were provided to translate into modern languages?
I don't understand what you just said.
God works all things according to the counsel of his own will; so, the Greek, Hebrew and other manuscripts that were available to the Reformers, from which they translated the Bible into English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, etc., were from God's providence. Trusting the character of God, at an epochal time of return to God and his word, means that we should trust that the available manuscripts (and the collations made from them) were highly trustworthy. This enabled the Reformers to make trustworthy translations.

In contrast to this, the Greek texts upon which most (but not all) modern N.T. translations are based, were created based on the suppositions of people who did not accept the verbal inspiration of Scripture (i.e. they did not believe that every word in the originals was inspired); they also had a deep-seated hatred (we know this from their own writings) of the Greek text used by the Reformers and wanted to replace it with their own.

Using their own suppositions, and just two Greek manuscripts, they created a replacement Greek N.T.. This happened in the late 1800s; and the immediate result was that the Revised Version and the American Standard Version were based on this replacement Greek text, which undermined trust in God's word in the churches, since the new versions had numerous changes and omissions, some serious. Their mandate had only been to revise the English of the Authorised Version, not the underlying Greek or Hebrew text, but they secretly introduced their own text and managed to persuade the translation committees to use that instead.

Most modern translations are based on a Greek text that is similar to the one used in the Revised Version.

This is a greatly shortened and simplified version of what happened, but I can supply much more detail, if necessary.

The problem with the KJV is that the English language has changed. Some words no longer mean what they used to mean.
Rather, the problem is that folks don't read whatever bible they have and thus don't discern that the Bible itself defines its words. The "changed language" argument is a red herring.

And I've had the experience that some don't even understand a whole verse...
let alone a word.
Understanding doesn't comes from men; it comes from the Holy Spirit whom we are told to approach with our questions.

If we believe in God's providence, then we'll trust that what God provided the Reformers (the manuscripts used to translate the Bibles into the local languages), at a time of epochal return to God and his word, was highly trustworthy, which, in turn, will mean that we do not trust the text underlying most modern translations.
We can see the effect of the Bible used from the time of the Reformation - the result of newer versions correlates with a falling away from faith in "Christian" countries.

I think Jerome did the best he could to fix all the errors in the NT back in the 4th century...
but now we have so much more information by way of manuscripts that have been found....
I think the way to salvation could have always been understood in any version at any time.
But good information, thanks.

Jerome's Vulgate was a Roman Catholic translation into Latin. He was accused, at the time, of using corrupt manuscripts; and it is widely regarded as a poor translation.

When the eastern part of the Roman Empire was overrun by Muslim hordes, in the 1400s, many Christians fled to the West, taking important Greek documents with them. It is partly due to this that the Reformers were able to translate the N.T. from reliable Greek N.T. manuscripts, rather than having to rely so heavily upon the unreliable Latin Vulgate.

Agreed that it was not a very good translation.
But those that came before it were much worse.
The reason he rewrote the previous scriptures is exactly because they were so badly done.

Muslim hordes...
yes,,,thank God for the Catholic Crusades or we'd all be speaking Arabic.

Interesting comment.
By newer versions, what do you mean?

I see a great falling away but it seems to have more to do with the society we live in.
What came first the chicken or the egg?
Not sure.

But I don't think the bible had much to do with it because it's not really used much except in the states.

The Bible is used by Christians everywhere in the world!

Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God; so, if the word of God is tampered with, faith is reduced amongst God's people.

Agreed David.
I didn't state it properly.
The bible IS used all over the world....
just not by individual persons.
For instance, I live in Italy.
People in Europe are not used to reading the bible.
This does not mean ALL persons in Europe...
but it is just not culturally important, as it is in the states...
especially in the bible belt.

Do you mean that individual Christians in Europe are not used to reading the Bible? I live in Britain, and almost every Christian I've known read the Bible quite regularly.

Nobody in other parts of the world are getting born again and serving the Lord?
They are going to need to know what God said in order to do so.
So difficult to post to the young.

Read Romans 1:18-20 and then come back and report.

18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.

What does the above mean?

Some read the bible but don't do what is says and remain deceived.

James 1:22
Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

1 John 1:6,7
If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
