I did some searching on this, and found a side by side from a couple of angles. I wish I could find it again. There was one shot that shows the mics on their booms.

They look like handheld smaller mics, held up in front of him, but they are actually larger, lower, on long poles. My first thought was that yes, this was a green screen error, but I don't think so now. I think it really was a perspective based optical illusion.
