What is sin?To sin is to go against God. God gave Moses ten commandment. Jesus summed them up into love for God and love for our fellow human beings. Therefore, to go against love-which is to be selfish, is to sin. Jesus showed us what true love is. He loved us first; without expecting anything in return. He loved us by sacrificing His life in order to compensate for our sins; although we betrayed Him and was unfaithful to Him. Only this kind of love is free of selfishness or sin. Therefore, to be free of sin we must love God and our fellow human being unconditionally.

As per Bible definition for "what is sin," will be discovered in the Bible passage given from 1John 3:2-7 below. 2Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 3And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.[Question: What is sin?Answer: "sin is the transgression of the law."] 4Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for [sin is the transgression of the law.] 5And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. 6Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. 7Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. But from this definition we have another question that should arise in our thoughts. Which law is john making reference to that we should find ourselves in conformity with rather than acting in opposition to it?Read the answer from Romans chapter seven. Where are the "commandments" which he speaks of as "Holy. Just and Good" drawn from? Now read and consider what James, chapter 2, tells us of love, law, faith and works? What should we understand of Jesus words, to the disciples,"If you love me , keep my commandments." commandments relative to what?

Sin (wrongdoing) can be committed against a person (causing damage, pain, or suffering). That another person experiences pain and suffering will cause a Godly Christian to feel SORROW (true compassion).Sin "against heaven" (such as cheating on a test, etc.) might not cause anybody pain and suffering (victimless crime), but it is WRONG (the prodigal son sinned against heaven).Sin can also be committed against man's CODES (codes of etiquette, dress codes, table manners, etc.), yet does not yield any true harm, pain, suffering, or destruction (inconsequential except for imposed shame). The prodigal son's father was the REAL victim because the dad's intentions of leaving an inheritance for his son were mocked and destroyed, yet the father/dad treated his son with lovingkindness and rejoiced because his son returned home (repented). Luke 15:18 RSV "I have sinned against heaven..." AND (but) BEFORE YOU".We are to live under the "law of liberty" (James 1:25 and 2:12) because the 'sin laws' were abolished (Ephesians 2:15). The wages of sin would have caused death. We are to learn a "MORE EXCELLENT WAY" (1 Corinthians 12:31) and learn the "DEPTHS OF GOD" (1 Corinthians 2:10). We are to "WALK BY THE SPIRIT" (Galatians 5:16 and 25) and learn the "better things" (Hebrews 6:9). We are to do the works of God (John 6:28 and 29) and be justified IN Christ (Galatians 2:16 and 2:17). These verses are more easily understood in the RSV.Read the "word of truth" (2 Timothy 2:15, Ephesians 1:13, John 14:6), it is the INTRODUCTORY doctrine of Jesus (Hebrews 6:1, Ephesians 6:17).
