2 Corinthians 5:10, the frame is still standing, but it is black, the air still smells of smoke and the concrete underneath has not moved at all. A builder is looking at what is left, the foundation held, the house did not and he is asking the question you feel when you hear that Christians will face judgment. If the foundation is secure, what exactly burned? If you are forgiven, what can you still lose? If the verdict is already grace, why is there still an evaluation? If your sins are washed away, what is left for God to weigh? That tension is not a mistake in scripture, it is the doorway. Consider two lives that end up in front of the same Lord, one is quiet, no stage, no following, the other is impressive, large work, admired work, numbers and applause and a name people know.

Now, imagine both passing through the same truth and one loses almost everything he built and yet he himself is spared, while the other hears honor he never chased. Paul forces you to look at this, he is writing to Christians in Corinth, people he loves, people divided and proud and confused about what counts and he does not say judgment is only for outsiders, 2 Corinthians 5:10, notice who is inside that all, we must all. Paul puts himself in it, he puts faithful believers in it, no one is waved past, everyone who belongs to Christ will be revealed before Christ. Here is what most people miss at first, the word is “revealed,” this is not God finding out what he did not know, it is God bringing into the light what was true all along.

Your life in the body, time, words, money, private choices will be disclosed and each one will receive according to that life. Christians will appear, forgiveness does not cancel appearance, but what kind of appearance is it, is it condemnation, is it a second trial to decide heaven or hell or is it something else entirely? Paul never lets you stay there, he holds assurance in one hand and accountability in the other and he will not drop either one. Scripture speaks of salvation as a free gift received through faith in Jesus, not earned by works. Paul says in his letter to the Ephesians, that we are saved by grace through faith and even that its not our own achievement, it is gift from beginning to end.
