Your Whole purpose on earth is to come to a non-separated (in your mind) state with Christ. After being born again - the only separation a believer can have is in mind - soul/mind. When the mind is taken from Christ (my mind) and given to body (scripture call that flesh) - you have separation. Dividing soul and spirit is; you determining by the word of God, who you are! and who he is in you! Only by the word of God can you do that because it takes that power to separate them because of old knowledge.
One is soulish or soul, that is a part of 'you,' if you will. Body soul and spirit.
The other is him and that is; 'the joined unto Christ spirit' the believer now has at the moment of believing on the Lord Jesus Christ. It is small s' because he (the Lord) has been 'joined unto' our spirit. If you were to say 'Christ liveth in me' or similar statements - you can place in the capital S' for being God himself by Christ' living in you by his Spirit - Deity.
But in union it is small s' because of union - oneness. But take note: that union life is a complete done deal, a completed package (it is finished) by Christ in you. Those scriptures do not speak of a deity life in union - oneness - other than Christ' being the life by his Spirit. But in salvation scriptures (he that is joined unto spirit life), small s'.
