Why did Jesus come?

"The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." John 10:10

How did he provide us with Life?

"Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed." John 6:53-55

So then the Life comes from eating his flesh and drinking his blood, but what was his work for God?

"Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work." John 4:34

"Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent." John 6:29

This speaks of our work, does it not, rather than the work of Jesus? So what did Jesus do for God?

"I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work." John 9:4

His work had to be finished before nightfall, whatever that means. He did finish it:

"I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest
me to do." John 17:4

Was his work suffering and death on the cross?

Was not his prayer in Gethsemene [chapter 17 of John] prior to being tortured and crucified on the cross? If this is so, why did he say that he had finished his work. Then apparently the suffering and death on the cross was NOT part of his work. Perhaps his work was to be the first overcomer:

"These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. " John 16:33

Does the following verse clear this up?

"Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again." John 10:17

(I wish you hadn't included the John 6 53 verses that is bound to turn this thread into "yet another" Cath v P debate. )

Me, I believe Jesus came because that was always the Plan...even before Adam and Eve. The Price of Redemption...
Jesus was obedient unto the death, doing the will of the Father. He had no free ride, it was not ( as some think) easier for Him, because He was God's Son. He lay all aside to become one of us, and to take back what 'one of us' gave away to the Enemy. But even that was all in the Plan.
God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself. It was The Plan.

I also believe that when God said - " It is not good for man to be alone"..
He was giving us a hint...God is a lover and well as being Love.
We are for His glory.

Heb 12:2 "Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the JOY that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God."

If we hold the vision in Joy that is before us...we can work the works of God in holding fast to the calling, setting our face as a flint.

My two cents...

Yes, Jesus coming always in God's plan. Everything he did was according to that plan. As we serve him we should all continue to grow closer to him. So then we must learn more of him, no?

"Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls." Matt 11:29

How is it that we learn of him?

lets just simply ask Jesus 'why have you come' = answer ='I have come not to judge the world but to save it' imho - twinc

overcoming is the work, which also includes overcoming death. the cross is a very important part of the work. its what He came to do. resurrection can't be done without the experience of death first. Gethsemane is when He started His journey into the heart of the earth, from Heaven's view that starts with Him leaving Himself into the hands of man. man is the entry way into the earth from Heaven, at the least God's chosen entry way. so by doing so He was going to do what He agreed to do, drink of that cup, that He told the Father He would rather not.
