Why was it necessary for Jesus to leave in order for the Holy Spirit to come to the apostles?

John 16:7

English Standard Version

7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.

Off the top of my head, Jesus and the Holy Spirit were the same person. Until Jesus left, the apostles would not recognize the Holy Spirit inside them.

Good question, and one I've wondered about now and then. @Bob Estey , your answer sounds plausible.

Jesus' spirit is in the Fathers. I saw this in a vision of the Holy Spirit some years ago and I believe it. Perhaps that's why? Don't know.

John 14:20 At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.

I don't know the answer to that question but I'm glad he did.
Perhaps it was because he couldn't stay with us physically after his resurrection but his spirit could. His physical body could only be in one place at once whereas his spirit could be in all of us at the same time.
