What a story

WHY DOGS LIVE LESS THAN HUMAN

Here's the surprising answer of a 6 year old child.

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog’s owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn’t do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker‘s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker’s Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that dogs' lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, ”I know why.”

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I’d never heard a more comforting explanation. It has changed the way I try and live.

He said, ”People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life — like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?” The six-year-old continued,

”Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay for as long as we do.”

Live simply.
Love generously.
Care deeply.
Speak kindly.

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:

• When your loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
• Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
• Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy.
• Take naps.
• Stretch before rising.
• Run, romp, and play daily.
• Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
• Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
• On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.
• On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
• When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
• Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
• Be faithful.
• Never pretend to be something you’re not.
• If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
• When someone you love is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

And the old saying, "you can't teach an old dog new tricks", really means that new tricks are unnecessary because he already understands how to love everybody and be nice.

I have been deeply involved in stamps lately. I am still selling them but even the preparation to sell them requires a lot of time and work. I think I got it to the point where I'll have more time to spend on forums as the Lord leads me.
Give God the glory!

I've had a lot of dogs up here in the Ouachitas over the decades. Mostly we've had rat terriers. They're loyal brave little fellows who think they're pit bulls.

Spanky, the first of our clan fathered several notable pups including Ringo. I docked all their tails shortly after birth to an inch or so long. Ringo was so named since on his white tail a black ring went all the way around.

Ringo was always around when I was outside even if I couldn't see him. I'd be working at something and glance over and he'd be lying in the shade, head between his paws pointed toward me. He just wanted to be where I was.

One day in the river bottom I heard the four of them, spanky, Ringo, patch and their sister, making a rowdy-dow. Riding my atv through the thick brush I saw the dogs in a pool of water and they were surrounding a raccoon. Raccoons are notorious dog drownders. Their paws are like hands and they'll take a dog by the ears and hold its head under water! I'm a old coon hunter from back when and have great respect for the fierceness and tenacity of a coon.

I watched old spanky swim out to the coon and the varmint would push his head under the water. Instead of fighting back spank would instead wisely dive down thus escaping the animal's grasp. Popping to the surface he'd have another go.

I then saw a dog lying still on the bottom of the pool. I rushed down to rescue and the raccoon took off with the dogs in pursuit. It was Ringo that I pulled up and he was gone. I poured the water out of him and blew air into his lungs and did some compressions. But he was dead. I carried him home up on the ridge and buried him up in the woods. My wife and I had a good cry together closing another chapter in the pages of life.

They're all gone now but I recall their brave little spirits and the four of them running with me every time I launched out on the atv or tractor.

Much wisdom is given to children. Much.

... and said to Him, "Do You hear what these children are saying?" And Jesus said to them, "Yes; have you never read, ' out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise for yourself '?"
Matthew 21:16 NASB

When our Joanna was only about five she piped up out of the blue one day and stated with authority "I know why God made the devil"!

My wife and I looked at each other and were astounded. Practically in unison we asked "why"?

Her answer was as astounding as her statement.

"so He could see who we were going to follow". It was all so simple to her and she never even looked up from what she was doing.

As we prayed at meals and thanked God for the days she would proclaim in her sweet little voice "God's just givin' us a whole bunch a days"!

Yes dear, but it seems to me not nearly enough. Not nearly.
