Galatians 5:22-23, the Greek word in Galatians chapter 5 is agape, agape is not less than affection, but it is not dependent on affection, it is not merely warmth, attraction, chemistry or sentiment, in the New Testament, agape is love shaped by the character and action of God. Love seeks the true good of the other before God, even when the other person is inconvenient, unimpressive or costly to love, that is why love comes first. Without love, gifts become performance. Without love, truth becomes a weapon. Without love, holiness becomes superiority. Without love, even sacrifice can become self-display. Paul does not say tongues are bad, he does not say prophecy is bad, he does not say spiritual gifts are the problem, in fact, he teaches the church how to use them rightly, he refuses to let them confuse spiritual manifestation with spiritual maturity.

A symbol can be loud and empty at the same time, agape is what turns volume into music. So, the crisis in Corinth asks the first question of the fruit of Spirit, what happens when gifted people are not loving people? Paul’s answer is brutal and merciful at the same time, they become noise. To live agape is not simply to feel warm toward people, it is to ask, what is truly good for this person before God, it is to serve without using, to tell the truth without enjoying the wound, to give without turning generosity into theater, to be right in a way that still looks like Christ. And once love is in place, the list moves from the way you treat others to what survives inside you when circumstances collapse, the next word is joy, the first place you should look is not a bright room with music and candles, it is a jail.

Paul and Silas are in Philippi, the city is a Roman colony, proud of its status, shaped by Roman law, Roman order and Roman power, they have cast a spirit of divination out of a slave girl and when her owners realize their profit is gone, they drag Paul and Silas before the authorities. Notice what makes the city angry, a girl has been delivered, but someone has lost money, the gospel has set a person free and the economy of exploitation is offended. The crowd rises, the magistrates order Paul and Silas beaten with rods, their backs are torn open, then they are thrown into the inner prison and their feet are fastened in stocks.

The inner prison was not made for sleep, it was dark, secure and humiliating, the air would have been heavy, their bodies would have been aching, every movement would pull against bruises, they could not wash the blood from their backs, they could not stretch their legs, they could not pretend the mission had gone soothly. Acts 16:25, midnight is when pain gets louder, midnight is when the questions start and the prisoners are listening, that detail matters, Paul and Silas are not singing in a private devotional bubble, their suffering has an audience, other men in the dark are hearing what faith sounds like before anything changes.

The jail part is what got me. Paul and Silas had every reason to be bitter at midnight, and instead they sang with their backs torn open. Makes me think joy isn't a mood, it's what's left when love is still steering you. Philippians 4:4 says "Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice," and Paul wrote that from prison too. Hard to fake that without love underneath it.
