Yes they can injure and kill.
But our Los Angeles area bears (near the foothills) waddle through back yards, go in the swimming pools, sleep in trees and look through trash on trash days. They don't bother people.

One time an elderly couple was visiting from Scotland....they were slowly exiting their family's home...a big bear was on the porch with them. They didn't see it! Finally the lady saw it once she was in the car. Her husband finally realized after that!
