Nicodemus struggled with the concept of being born again in John 3:
Wiki:
Later, Nicodemus defended Jesus in John 7:4 Nicodemus said to him [Jesus], “How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother’s womb and be born?”
Nicodemus and Joseph showed up at the cross, John 19:45 the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?”
46“No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards replied.
47“You mean he has deceived you also?” the Pharisees retorted. 48“Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him? 49No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law—there is a curse on them.”
50 Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, 51“Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?”
It took Nicodemus courage to challenge the Sanhedrin and prove himself indispensable by burying Jesus's body. Given the gravity of the situation at the time, it was a declaration of his faith. He was telling the Jews publicly that he had not consented to the blasphemy verdict produced by the Sanhedrin just the night before.38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. 39 Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesuse by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five poundsf in weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.
