Nicodemus struggled with the concept of being born again in John 3:

4 Nicodemus said to him [Jesus], “How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother’s womb and be born?”
Later, Nicodemus defended Jesus in John 7:

45 the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?”
46“No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards replied.
47“You mean he has deceived you also?” the Pharisees retorted. 48“Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him? 49No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law—there is a curse on them.”
50 Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, 51“Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?”
Nicodemus and Joseph showed up at the cross, John 19:

38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. 39 Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesuse by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five poundsf in weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.
It took Nicodemus courage to challenge the Sanhedrin and prove himself indispensable by burying Jesus's body. Given the gravity of the situation at the time, it was a declaration of his faith. He was telling the Jews publicly that he had not consented to the blasphemy verdict produced by the Sanhedrin just the night before.

Wiki:

Nicodemus is venerated as a saint in the various Eastern Churches and in the Roman Catholic Church.

i believe these influential men do stand a chance of being saved, because they've sown by faith the size of a mustard seed, unto the Lord. Nevertheless, this may also seem like a speculation rather because, is it truly a faith the size of the mustard seed mentioned relates to them? Because, there's another part of the scripture that may predict otherwise in regards them.

For it is written, 'Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on Him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue: For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of GOD.'

While on the other hand, true born again Apostles and church lay down their own lives for the Gospel. And likewise they lose every thing they've owned for the sake of following the Lord and Messiah's Kingdom of GOD.

The reason Nicodemus struggled with being born again is he was born again in all the ways a Jew of his state could be.

To Jews one could be born again six times. Nicodemus was born again 5 of the 6.

1. Bar 9bat) mitzvah
2. Marriage
3. Being Rabbi
4. having children.
5. Becoming a teacher of Israel.
6. Being anointed King.

That is why he was confused . Jesus then showed Him it was a spiritual birth and not a natural event that was required.

Yes, they stand a chance to be saved. Did not Jesus say that ALL would be offended... including the closest 11 disciples?
Mr 14:27
And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.
Did it not happen as He said?

Mr 14:50And they all forsook him, and fled.
Where then might Joseph of Arimathaea and Nicodemus in the scripture found to be less faithful than the eleven? Lots of people failed the Lord before the Day of Pentecost in Acts 2 and even thereafter. Perhaps this why we also are to be careful in rendering any final judgments without more knowledge...

"All ye', Jesus is refering to His disciples, not the believing or unbelieving Jews, even Gamaliel, Nicodemus or Joseph. And, apparently it's natural for the disciples without the Holy Spirit to be offended with Jesus. Since their hoped Messiah for freedom, surrendered without a fight, and have Himself crucified to death. Nevertheless, they stood by Him, where after the resurrection, for forty days He appeared to them.

Ones whom have given up and lost every thing of their biological family's, due to them. Just for the sake of the Lord and His Gospel they alone believed and trusted in. On the other hand, the cheif rulers who believed in Jesus stood by the councel of offense and hostility, especially due to the Pharisees. For they were afraid lest they should be put out of the synagogue they've seats in achievement. And as a result, for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of GOD.

On the contrary to a similar Pharisee, Saul who became Paul, and was the most wanted in Jerusalem.
Mr 14:50And they all forsook him, and fled.
Where then might Joseph of Arimathaea and Nicodemus in the scripture found to be less faithful than the eleven?
Ponder wisely, as the answer is very clear according to the Scripture, rather than we going back and forth in vain.

You miss the mark, no one is pronouncing judgement, nor are without knowledge, for we present scripture points. On the contrary, from your counterpart view without enough scripture points, have already pronounce judgement on Joesph and Nicodemus as 'saints'. As making them 'equal' with the Apostles and the church of Lord Jesus Christ who are the true 'saints.

Furthermore, there's no supporting evidence they were mentioned in the book of Acts or even in the epistles. Probably to justify them as equally 'saints', who continued with the Apostles or church after Jesus, as James His half-brother did.

Thank you and peace be with you in Jesus name.
