How many good works does it take to open heaven’s door? If your answer is anything other than Christ, you are standing on sinking ground.
That is the question we need to press, because many people speak of grace while quietly building a ladder of works. They say salvation is by grace, but then make final entrance into eternal life depend on whether a man has obeyed enough, endured enough, suffered enough, served enough, and stayed faithful enough. But Scripture does not leave us guessing. If works are the deciding factor, then the question must be asked plainly: do you have enough good works right now to enter heaven? If not, how many more do you need?
Paul answers that with a sword-sharp word in Romans 4:4-5: “Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.” That is not hard to understand. If salvation is finally given because of your works, then it is not grace. It is debt. God would be paying you what you earned. But Paul says God justifies “the ungodly,” not the man who has performed enough to qualify.
Picture a man buried under a debt so large he could never pay it back. Every paycheck is too small. Every effort falls short. Every payment only proves how deep the hole really is. Then someone steps in and pays the full debt. That man does not walk away bragging about his payment plan. He walks away grateful because mercy did what his effort could never do. That is grace.
The Bible says, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” Ephesians 2:8-9. God shuts the door on boasting. No sinner will stand in glory and say, “Christ helped, but my endurance finished the job.” No. Heaven will be filled with redeemed sinners saying, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain” Revelation 5:12.
Does that mean good works do not matter? No. That is another ditch. The very next verse says, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works” Ephesians 2:10. Good works are not the price of salvation. They are the fruit of salvation. A dead tree does not produce fruit to become alive. It produces fruit because it is alive. A corpse does not work its way out of the grave. It must be raised. Then it walks.
That is why Titus 3:5 is so clear: “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us.” Then Paul says in Titus 3:8 that believers should “be careful to maintain good works.” The order matters. Mercy saves. Then the saved maintain good works. If you reverse that order, you do not have the gospel. You have man trying to climb into heaven with dirty hands and a broken ladder.
What about obedience? What about endurance? What about abiding in Christ? Scripture teaches all of it. Jesus said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments” John 14:15. He also said, “He that endureth to the end shall be saved” Matthew 10:22. But those verses do not teach that obedience pays for eternal life. They show the life of those who truly belong to Christ. Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” John 10:27. Then He said, “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish” John 10:28. The sheep follow, but the Shepherd keeps.
Here is the real question: are you trusting Christ, or are you trusting Christ plus your record? If your hope rests on your obedience, how obedient have you been? If your hope rests on endurance, have you endured perfectly? If your hope rests on commandment keeping, Galatians 3:10 says, “Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.” Not most things. Not sincere things. “All things.”
That leaves every honest sinner silent.
But then the gospel speaks. “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us” Galatians 3:13. That is the good news. Christ did not come to give sinners a better ladder. He came to save sinners who had no ladder at all.
Good works matter. Endurance matters. Obedience matters. But none of them are the ground of eternal life. Christ is. Grace saves. The Spirit changes. Faith works. God keeps.
