As the predecessor to the wise ruler Moses, Joshua was required to rule in his place as the leader in charge. Given the title as leader, Joshua was forced to take on the task of primary leadership according to the careful instructions from God. As part of Joshua's role as a leader God instructed Joshua to lead his men across the Jordan River to the land God provided for them. To ensure that Joshua and his men would be safe on their journey God instructed them to study the Bible and remember the helpful words of Moses.

With the helpful words of wisdom from God, Joshua instructed to gather some food and prepare to cross the Jordan River. Then Joshua and his men set out on their journey and served as a guide to help his men along the way. One of the ways Joshua served as an interpretive guide was when he instructed his men to follow the priests with the covenant box. Then Joshua explained that the priests with the covenant box were the key towards crossing the Jordan River.

Then Joshua explained that once the priests reached the Jordan River, they would stand at the river and the water would immediately stop. Then the () would provide a clear passage for Joshua and his men to safely cross over and reach the other side. Promptly after crossing the Jordan River, Joshua provided his next set of instructions to his men. Joshua instructed each of his men to pick up a stone and place them across the path of the Jordan River they walked down. Joshua also carried several stoned and placed them upon the camp site that they were currently abiding in.
