Idolatry is a form of worship towards an object, a person a habit or anything that raises itself up higher than God in our hearts. It is in our thoughts when we wake up, throughout our day and at night when we are about to go to bed. In the O/T God commanded his people not to have any other Gods (Ex 20:3-5) and they were to destroy all the idols that were in the land they were about to possess but this did not happen completely (Deut 7:1-7) and his people began to worship the idols of those nations. (Deut 29:26)

As christians we should not have any other God as echoed in (Exodus 20) and should Love the Lord our God with all our heart and with all our soul and with all your mind, as Jesus stated in Matt22:37.

Today idols can be anything from technology to your work life, your relationships, your church, your doctrine, your Pastor, your ministry, food, addictions ie: alcohol, smoking, drug addiction, pornography, masterbation or anything that we need to put to death that is considered as earthly/worldly in you, sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry because on account of these the wrath of God is coming. Colossians 3:6

Idols can destroy our relationship with God and with others, It leads you into sin, it can take away our peace of mind and can drive/compel us into desiring something that is not good for us or our walk with God. 1 Corinth 6:9 says (included in this list) Idolators shall not inherit the kingdom of heaven.

The good news however, can be found in 1 John 2 which says: My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments.

So there is an opportunity of repentance and restoration, not just for the believer but for the whole world.

To overcome the idols in our heart we need to humble ourselves and be honest. Identify what those idols are, repent and forgive others if there are those whom you need to forgive, pray and ask God for deliverance from this Spirit attributed to the world..

Commit to having these things removed from your life completely. Close doors (areas in your life) that will try to intice you back. Have a support person, a spiritual leader or someone you can trust who you can be accountable to and contact when necessary. Renew your mind and take those thoughts captive daily, (2 Cor 10:5) making them obedient to Christ.

Pray against ungodly attractions that once held your attention, fill your life with prayer, worship, bible reading and study his word. Fellowship with other believers and change your lifestyle and habits.

There is an old saying: "When there are two dogs fighting. The one who wins will be the dog that is fed the most."

Below is a generic prayer created by a well known evangelist and healer from my country, Bill Subrisky

Prayer for deliverance

“Dear Heavenly Father I come to You in the mighty name of Your Son Jesus Christ. I believe He died on the Cross to pay the penalty for all my sins, to forgive me, to heal me and to reconcile me to You. I confess Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour and I repent of these sins (Be specific here and name the things).

Thank you Heavenly Father for your forgiveness and love.

I confess that Jesus shed His blood for me on the Cross and I now plead the protection of that precious blood over my whole life. In the name of Jesus Christ I command every spirit of (Idolatry) to flee from me. I rebuke you in the name of Jesus Christ and thank You Lord Jesus for Your healing. Amen”.

Please follow the above directions carefully and you will know the blessing of God for healing and deliverance.
Finally, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” (James 4:8).

Be Blessed!
