What different meanings does salt have in the Bible?
Salt has several functions: (1) it enhances the flavor of food, (2) it is a preservative, (3) it was included in some sacrifices, and (4) it is an essential nutrient.
Why do we have salt? Primarily flavor enhancement
Why is the sea salty? Primarily runoff from rocks. Also from the seabed.
What does it mean to be salted? Tested for corruption
What does it mean, ye are the salt of the earth? We are to stand against corruption

Gen 14:1 And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations;
Gen 14:2 That these made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, which is Zoar.
Gen 14:3 All these were joined together in the vale of Siddim, which is the salt sea.
Gen 14:4 Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.

This is the first instance salt is recorded.
Siddim, the salt sea.
Siddîym, sid-deem'; plural from the same as H7704; flats; Siddim, a valley in Palestine:—Siddim.

Gen 14:8 And there went out the king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (the same is Zoar;) and they joined battle with them in the vale of Siddim; H7708
Gen 14:10 And the vale of Siddim H7708 was full of slimepits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and fell there; and they that remained fled to the mountain.

The plain of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, from the sinking of which, the Dead Sea has come into existence.

slimepits:
bᵉʼêr, be-ayr'; from H874; a pit; especially a well:—pit, well.

Wells and pits is another interesting trail.. but I'll try to stay with salt.

This Salt Sea aka: Dead Sea...before Abraham and the wars with Sodom and Gomorrah..
slimepits..

Gen 11:1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.
Gen 11:2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.
Gen 11:3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.

  1. slime, pitch, asphalt, bitumem

Asphalt
Asphalt, also known as bitumen, is a sticky, black, highly viscous liquid or semi-solid form of petroleum. It may be found in natural deposits or may be a refined product, and is classed as a pitch. Before the 20th century, the term asphaltum was also used. The word is derived from the Ancient Greek ἄσφαλτος ásphaltos.

Gen 6:14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.

Exo 5:18 Go therefore now, and work; for there shall no straw be given you, yet shall ye deliver the tale of bricks.
Exo 5:19 And the officers of the children of Israel did see that they were in evil case, after it was said, Ye shall not minish ought from your bricks of your daily task.

It's like watching the beginning of manufacturing..
Begin with petroleum, refine it to pitch, add straw and make mortar. Bricks.

Is there salt in petroleum?

What is a Salt Dome? How do they form? - Geology
What is a Salt Dome? How do they form?
Salt domes are very important to the petroleum industry. As a salt dome grows, the cap rock above it is arched upwards. This cap rock can serve as an oil or natural gas reservoir. As a dome grows, the rocks that it penetrates are arched upwards along the sides of the dome (see both illustrations at the top of this page).

A resevoir for oil...
Remember Lot's wife?
She was turned into a pillar of salt.
A resevoir of oil.. to give light.. remember lot's wife.

Everything we make today is made from petroleum. Even down to the packaging your food comes in.
We live by slime.
And we build everything with slime and bricks...
And now we have slime meat...

Things are getting salty..

just rambling..

Hi Ziggy, we are composed of the elements of the earth, we are what we eat. Salt makes up a portion of us, and in fact we need it for survival. God's intricate systems that all work together for life of all His creatures is amazing. The more one studies it, the more we see the evidence of a designer. We have a wonderful series of videos available entitled was it designed that you might appreciate maam.

I don't find it odd that Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed by fire and brimstone.
They sat upon plains of petroleum.
And today everything runs and is made with petroleum.
We use it to warm us, to cook with...
which reminds me of a verse:

Isa 44:15 Then shall it be for a man to burn: for he will take thereof, and warm himself; yea, he kindleth it, and baketh bread; yea, he maketh a god, and worshippeth it; he maketh it a graven image, and falleth down thereto.
Isa 44:17 And the residue thereof he maketh a god, even his graven image: he falleth down unto it, and worshippeth it, and prayeth unto it, and saith, Deliver me; for thou art my god.

And I don't find it odd that the world will burn at the end of the age.
Because we have made oil our money... and the love of money is the root of all evil.

Salt:
Gen 19:23 The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar.
Gen 19:24 Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;
Gen 19:25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.
Gen 19:26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

She became a pillar of salt.

Pillars of salt are formed in the flats as resevoirs for oil.
Resevoir is a holding place.
Lot's wife is a place holder in time.
Remember Lot's wife.

placeholder:
One who holds an office or place, especially as a deputy, proxy, or appointed government official.

Lot's wife looked back...

Luk 9:62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

Luk 17:26 And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.
Luk 17:27 They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.
Luk 17:28 Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded;
Luk 17:29 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.
Luk 17:30 Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.
Luk 17:31 In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back.
Luk 17:32 Remember Lot's wife.
Luk 17:33 Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.

Gen 13:10 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.

well watered, turned into slimepits..
before the great and terrible day of the Lord.

And the earth became void... (just a thought)

void of understanding.. turning back from the right paths..lost

Ye are the salt of the earth... the placeholders..
and yet our eyes are forward and not backward..
ploughing onward christian soldiers..

Salt..

Gen 6:14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch

The word in Genesis 6:14 isn't pitch
It's כָּפַר (kaphar)
Which is literally the word "atonement"

atone it within and without
at onement

I have such a hard time with Leviticus...
that's where I find the word atonement most frequent..

I only find the word one time in the NT
Rom 5:11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

NLT translates like this:
So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.

this may take some travelling to get from atonement to friendship..
looks like a lot of dots to connect..

I'm not familiar too much with the meaning of atonement.
I know it's important.. but I haven't studied it...
yet.

I could use some help though :)

atone it within and without

Like the other ark, of the testimony, covered inside and out with gold

The priest sprinkled it with blood - a covering - once a year, to atone for the sins of Israel

In Leviticus blood-covering is for atonement for sin. The life is in the blood. An innocent substitute, their blood on the altar, for forgiveness.

Like a garment.
Like wedding clothes
Like a new tent

Yes and what do nurses give in hospitals to replace fluids in the body? Normal Saline...saline means consisting of or containing salt...
So your IV bag is mainly a salt solution....which other meds can be injected through as well.
The human body contains many salts, of which sodium chloride (AKA common table salt) is the major one, making up around 0.4 per cent of the body's weight at a concentration pretty well equivalent to that in seawater.

So a 50kg (110 lb) person would contain around 200g of sodium chloride - around 40 teaspoons. Since we lose salt whenever we sweat, it has to be continually replaced.

While excessive consumption of it has been linked to high blood pressure and stomach cancer, salt is a vital part of body chemistry, playing a key role in many functions, from the quality of blood to transmission of nerve signals

I don't think that's fair...

If I sin I just grab an innocent animal and kill it and it makes my sins disappear...

I have a really hard time with that.
No easier than an innocent man paying the blood price for all the guilty.

Why does there have to be killing?

I suppose I would have to journey all the way back to Cain..
greed, jealousy, envy...

works of the flesh.

thank you
I just have a hard time.. specially with Leviticus.

For the same reason Jesus laid down His life for us.

It ought to make us horrified and anguishingly sad.
It ought to make us hate sin
It ought to humble us, and prod us to cry for mercy & hunger for righteousness

Think of how Adam felt when that first lamb died in order for him to have a new tunic, a 'suitable covering' given by God. Adam knew that lamb. Adam had given it its name, personally.

When Cain and Abel are offering lambs to God - why? Well, what's in the text? Only 3 chapters precede it - anywhere lambs are having their blood shed? They are doing this as a remembrance. A remembrance of something very somber.

The attitude you hinted at, that it's some kind of 'quick and easy fix' for sin, isn't unlike murder. I agree. If we were under the law we should be greatly moved to keep ourselves from sin, to avoid the death of a blameless soul on our account at all costs.

But what attitude do you suppose people had, and have even today under the grace He offers us, one perfect divine sacrifice having been sufficient to cover all sin?
It's like you said, we trample on it, abuse it, think nothing of it, and it's awful - we should fear God

Salt is the topic.. ugh
I go where I am least comfortable..
Leviticus.

Lev 2:13 And every oblation of thy meat offering shalt thou season with salt; neither shalt thou suffer the salt of the covenant of thy God to be lacking from thy meat offering: with all thine offerings thou shalt offer salt.

salt of the covenant..

somebody was posting on this the other day.. I don't remember, maybe Covenants.. Charity?

oblation:
kor-bawn'; or קֻרְבָּן qurbân; from H7126; something brought near the altar, i.e. a sacrificial present:—oblation, that is offered, offering

Heb 13:9 Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.
Heb 13:10 We have an altar, whereof they have no right to eat which serve the tabernacle.
Heb 13:11 For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without the camp.
Heb 13:12 Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.
Heb 13:13 Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach.
Heb 13:14 For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.

that's heavy

If I sin I just grab an innocent animal and kill it and it makes my sins disappear...

Not 'disappear'
Covered, like with a robe. A tunic.
Atonement is covering

But there is also the idea of sin being taken away - something the blood of the creature can't do. Our Lord's divine-human blood, The Lamb, does this. It covers not only on the outside, like the blood on the altar, but inside and out. Like the gold on the Ark of the Testimony, and the pitch on the Ark of the flood.
Like David's sin with Bathsheba and Uriah. The son died. The man of God told him, the LORD has removed your sin

So the horror of an innocent soul dying for your sin isn't repeated over and over anymore, praise God! His own blood 'atones' for us as only it can do, inside and out, sealing us from the waters of judgement, from death, and death itself will be no more!

salt covenant:
Num 18:19 All the heave offerings of the holy things, which the children of Israel offer unto the LORD, have I given thee, and thy sons and thy daughters with thee, by a statute for ever: it is a covenant of salt for ever before the LORD unto thee and to thy seed with thee.

2Ch 13:5 Ought ye not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt?

heave offering:

tᵉrûwmâh, ter-oo-maw'; or תְּרֻמָה tᵉrumâh; (Deuteronomy 12:11), from H7311; a present (as offered up), especially in sacrifice or as tribute:—gift, heave offering (shoulder), oblation, offered(-ing).

shoulder..
There is no shoulder in the new testament...

Neh 9:29 And testifiedst against them, that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law: yet they dealt proudly, and hearkened not unto thy commandments, but sinned against thy judgments, (which if a man do, he shall live in them;) and withdrew the shoulder, and hardened their neck, and would not hear.

Isa 10:27 And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.

Nehemiah Chapter 9..
a trip down memory lane:
I post the video of the chapter. It's easier for me to hear than to read. It sinks in better..lol

Sure there is

Luke 15:5-6
And when he has found [it,] he lays [it] on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together [his] friends and neighbors, saying to them, 'Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!'

Love that one, it came straight to mind =]

As,

Luke 9:57-62
Now it happened as they journeyed on the road, [that] someone said to Him, "Lord, I will follow You wherever You go." And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air [have] nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay [His] head." Then He said to another, "Follow Me." But he said, "Lord, let me first go and bury my father." Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God." And another also said, "Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go [and] bid them farewell who are at my house." But Jesus said to him, "No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God."

Isa 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Isa 9:7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

2Pe 2:10 But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.

Col 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, G2963 or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

government.. shall be upon his shoulder...

politics and religion always go hand in hand..
